About The Position

The Optical Consultant designs, measures, fits, and adapts lenses and frames for patients according to written optical prescriptions or specifications. This role involves assisting patients with selecting frames, measuring customers for eyeglass size, and coordinating frames with facial and eye measurements and optical prescriptions. The consultant prepares work orders for the optical laboratory with instructions for lens grinding and mounting, and verifies the exactness of finished lens spectacles. Adjustments to frame and lens position are made to fit the client, and the consultant may also shape or reshape frames.

Requirements

  • At least 3 or more years of related work experience as an Optician / Optical Consultant, dispensing contact lenses and glasses.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to use a lensometer.
  • Superior customer service and sales skills.

  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Certified Dispensing Optician (a plus).

Responsibilities

  • Measure clients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using measuring devices.
  • Verify that finished lenses are ground to specifications.
  • Utilize a lensometer to validate patients prescription in eyewear.
  • Understand how to adequately train an individual on good contact lens insertion and removal practices.
  • Accurately describe vision benefits to the patient and navigate through multiple benefit options to provide high service levels.
  • Prepare work orders and instructions for grinding lenses and fabricating eyeglasses.
  • Assist clients in selecting frames according to style and color, and ensure that frames are coordinated with facial and eye measurements and optical prescriptions.
  • Maintain records of customer prescriptions, work orders, and payments.
  • Perform administrative duties such as tracking inventory and sales, submitting patient insurance information, and performing simple bookkeeping.
  • Recommend specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames to suit client needs.
  • Sell goods such as contact lenses, spectacles, sunglasses, and other goods related to eyes in general.
  • Heat, shape, or bend plastic or metal frames in order to adjust eyeglasses to fit clients, using pliers and hands.
  • Instruct clients in how to wear and care for eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Determine clients' current lens prescriptions, when necessary, using lensometers or lens analyzers and clients' eyeglasses.
  • Repair damaged frames.
  • Obtain a customer's previous record, or verify a prescription with the examining optometrist or ophthalmologist.
  • Arrange and maintain displays of optical merchandise.
  • Understand back-up protocol for processing patients in the event of system outages.
  • May work up patients for the Optometrist as needed.
  • Maintain an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor in accordance with Company policies.
  • Keep commitments and keep direct supervisor informed of work progress, timetables, and issues.
  • Obtain and review medical history and/or records from patient.
  • Maintain strict compliance with State, Federal and other regulations (e.g., OSHA, WC, HIPAA, ADA, FEHA, DOL, HR policies and practices).
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
