About The Position

The Optical Consultant designs, measures, fits, and adapts lenses and frames for patients according to written optical prescriptions or specifications. This role involves assisting patients with frame selection, measuring customers for eyeglasses, coordinating frames with facial and eye measurements and optical prescriptions, and preparing work orders for the optical laboratory. The consultant also verifies the accuracy of finished lenses and spectacles, adjusts frames and lens positions for optimal fit, and may shape or reshape frames. Key responsibilities include measuring clients' facial and eye dimensions, verifying lens specifications, training patients on contact lens care, explaining vision benefits, preparing work orders, assisting with frame selection, maintaining customer records, recommending optical products, selling eyewear and related goods, adjusting and repairing frames, instructing clients on eyewear use and care, determining lens prescriptions, arranging merchandise displays, understanding backup protocols for system outages, and potentially assisting the Optometrist with patient work-ups. The role requires maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor, keeping commitments, and informing supervisors of work progress. It also involves obtaining and reviewing medical history, and maintaining compliance with various regulations.

Requirements

At least 3 or more years of related work experience as an Optician / Optical Consultant, dispensing contact lenses and glasses.
Valid Driver’s License.
Ability to use a lensometer.

Certified Dispensing Optician (a plus).

Responsibilities

Measures clients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using measuring devices.
Verifies that finished lenses are ground to specifications.
Utilizes a lensometer to validate patients' prescriptions in eyewear.
Provides training on good contact lens insertion and removal practices.
Accurately describes vision benefits to patients and navigates through multiple benefit options.
Prepares work orders and instructions for grinding lenses and fabricating eyeglasses.
Assists clients in selecting frames according to style and color.
Maintains records of customer prescriptions, work orders, and payments.
Performs administrative duties such as tracking inventory and sales, submitting patient insurance information, and performing simple bookkeeping.
Recommends specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames to suit client needs.
Sells goods such as contact lenses, spectacles, sunglasses, and other related items.
Adjusts eyeglasses to fit clients by heating, shaping, or bending frames.
Instructs clients on how to wear and care for eyeglasses and contact lenses.
Determines clients' current lens prescriptions using lensometers or lens analyzers.
Repairs damaged frames.
Obtains a customer's previous record or verifies a prescription with the examining optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Arranges and maintains displays of optical merchandise.
Understands back-up protocol for processing patients in the event of system outages.
May work up patients for the Optometrist as needed.
Maintains an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor.
Keeps commitments and keeps direct supervisor informed of work progress, timetables, and issues.
Obtains and reviews medical history and/or records from patients.
Maintains strict compliance with State, Federal and other regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned by management.
