About The Position

This is a full-time position for an Ophthalmic Technician at Meadville Ophthalmic. The role involves preparing patients for visits, performing various pre-exam tests, assisting physicians with procedures, maintaining equipment and patient safety, and ensuring effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare professionals. The technician will also manage medical supplies, medications, and drug samples, handle prescription refill calls, maintain accurate medical records, and ensure the cleanliness of exam rooms and workstations. Additional duties include triaging patient phone calls, scheduling tests, managing medical information, and utilizing EMR systems. The position requires knowledge of emergency procedures and other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Sufficient experience may be substituted for the educational requirement.
  • Must possess great attention to detail.
  • Must be able to accurately type and be efficient with data entry equipment.
  • Must have the ability to apply appropriate rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of computers is necessary.
  • Must possess the ability to prioritize activities, organize work, and problem-solve.
  • Communications skills, both verbal and written, must be above average to excellent.
  • Must be able to communicate with the public sector by telephone use and in person.
  • Must be able to deal with anxious and angry people.
  • Must be able to communicate with administrative staff, managers, attorneys, physicians, and all hospital staff with due respect and tact.
  • Understanding of confidentiality rules is a must without exception.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patients for visits according to approved policies and procedures, including gathering history, symptoms, problems, and allergies.
  • Performs pre-exam testing such as auto refraction, OCT testing, A-scans, IOP testing, manual refraction, taking visions, visual fields, and patient dilation.
  • Notifies patients of lab and test results.
  • Assists physicians with procedures as requested.
  • Performs tests as ordered by the physician.
  • Maintains equipment and ensures patient and equipment safety.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively with patients, families, physicians, peers, and other health team members.
  • Assists in the facilitation of smooth patient flow.
  • Greets patients and families courteously.
  • Maintains good communication with physicians and co-workers.
  • Assures adequate amounts of medical supplies and medications are available and stocked appropriately.
  • Maintains inventory of drug samples and inventory, rotating stock to ensure oldest is used first, and checks expiration dates monthly.
  • Receives prescription refill calls and sends them to the pharmacy under physician supervision, documenting them in the patient record by the end of the business day.
  • Assures documentation in the medical record is complete, including lot numbers for samples.
  • Maintains exam rooms and workstation, ensuring cleanliness.
  • Triage patient phone calls.
  • Schedules tests or procedures for patients as appropriate.
  • Maintains medical information and filing and/or scanning.
  • Uses Meditech and/or other EMR systems (MicroMD).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
