About The Position

The Ophthalmic Technician assists the Ophthalmologist/Optician and other technical support personnel in performing diagnostic tests needed to evaluate patients. The role includes conducting preliminary screening examinations, coordinating patient flow and gathering information for patient charts, preparing and maintaining equipment and clinical rooms, and setting up instruments for ophthalmic procedures. The technician also assists with office surgery, laser treatments, and operating room surgery as required, and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, with appropriate training in the field.
• 0–1 year minimum as an Ophthalmic Technician, Medical Office Assistant, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Performs preliminary screening examinations for physician review, including central and peripheral visual field, ocular motility, color vision, pharmacological pupil, tonometry, tonography, and tensilon tonography tests; assesses pupil size, equality, and reaction before dilation.
• Directs patient flow for physician or optician examinations; obtains medical and personal data for patient charts; screens patients for conditions other than ocular examinations; arranges laboratory and other tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies, admissions, and surgery as requested; and explains diagnostic procedures and treatment methods to address patient and family concerns.
• Calibrates and maintains instruments, including bio-microscopes, lensometers, keratometers, tangent screens, slit lamps, and tonometers; cleans and stocks consultation rooms and the microbiology laboratory with drugs and other supplies as needed.
• Sterilizes and sets up instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures and assists with minor office surgery, laser treatments, and operating room surgery as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
