About The Position

The Ophthalmic Technician assists the medical practitioner/physician by taking medical history, performing initial eye examination and completing diagnostic testing. Additionally, provides assistance by cleaning and maintaining the examination room and equipment and maintaining the supply inventory. Performs high quality ophthalmic procedures, focusing on patient care and education. Supports and helps achieve departmental goals. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent OR 2 years of work experience in Optometry/Ophthalmology.

Nice To Haves

  • Accreditation from a technical school or an applicable skilled trades program
  • Successful completion of an Ophthalmic Assistant Program.

Responsibilities

  • Performs ophthalmic examinations and procedures in accordance with established departmental protocols
  • Prepares, positions, and safely transfers patients for examinations and procedures
  • Provides clear instructions and education to patients to ensure understanding and comfort
  • Accurately documents all examinations and procedures in patient records
  • Maintains complete and up-to-date medical documentation
  • Performs room turnover, including proper disposal of materials and thorough cleaning
  • Monitors inventory and restocks supplies and equipment as needed
  • Completes all required information system (IS) transactions accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ensures proper documentation to support patient medical records and billing processes
  • Applies knowledge of patient growth and development to deliver age-appropriate care and interactions
  • Performs patient assessments and technical skills to assess the ophthalmic status of each patient, including emergency procedures and medication administration as appropriate.
  • Performs diagnostics, takes history, tests vision, performs specialized ophthalmic testing, dispenses contact lenses and assists physicians.
  • Educates patients and documents patient interactions.
  • Collects patient medical history, eye measurements and determines intraocular pressure.
  • Supports ophthalmologists in the treatment of eye diseases and disorders.
  • Prepares and maintains examination equipment and rooms.
  • Contributes to the team as necessary to ensure quality patient care.
  • Manages medication supply, ordering and inventory.
