About The Position

The Ophthalmic Technician is an integral member of the pediatrics ophthalmology care team, providing clinical support to physicians and orthoptists while delivering compassionate, family-centered care to infants, children, adolescents, and adults. This role performs ophthalmic testing, gathers clinical information, assists with patient examinations, and helps ensure an exceptional experience for patients and families. The technician must be able to effectively engage children of all developmental stages and abilities while supporting efficient clinic operations.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED.
• 0-3 Years of Experience.
• Basic Life Support certification required within 30 days of employment, through the AHA. Other advanced life support certifications may be preferred per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
• Requires knowledge of infection control principles.
• Requires ability to effectively prioritize multiple patient care needs.

Nice To Haves

• COA through JCAHPO preferred
• Experience with basic ophthalmic workup and testing preferred.
• Prefer knowledge of exam room environment.
• Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COA) preferred.

Responsibilities

• Room patients and support providers during clinic visits
• Manage patient messages, paperwork, and prior authorizations
• Assist with both clinical and administrative duties
• Rooming patients and completing intake
• Assisting providers with patient care
• Documenting in Cerner
• Managing patient messages
• Scanning and maintaining medical records
• Preparing exam rooms and supporting clinic workflow
• Responsible for ophthalmic, diagnostic procedures and ophthalmic/medical assistance in support of the clinical activities of the department.
• Performs preliminary ophthalmic examinations.
• Explains testing procedures to patients.
• Assists providers with post-op surgery patients.
• Maintains diagnostic equipment.
• Cleans all equipment in exam rooms consistent with current infection control policies.
• Will stock exam rooms and work areas, while checking for expired supplies.
• May assist in minor OR procedures and ocular injections.
• May provide back-up support for other departments as needed.
