About The Position

The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full time opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 2 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The Ophthalmic Technician 2 (OT2) is proficient in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. This position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT/COA)
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Commitment to the University’s core values.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office).

Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record: Reason for visit, Chief complaint, History of present illness, Basic review of systems, Review systemic and ocular medications, Record allergies, Pharmacy information, Family, social, medical, and ocular history, Visual acuity at distance and near, Lensometry, Manual refraction, Confrontational fields, Humphrey visual fields, Tangent screen visual fields, Basic ocular motility, Pupillary evaluation, Ocular surface assessment, Eye drop administration, Intraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono-Pen, and I-Care, Pachymetry, Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses, Color vision test, Stereopsis test, Sensorimotor exam, Automated & manual perimetry, Virtual Reality (VR) visual field.
  • Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.
  • Provides patient-centric care.
  • Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training.
  • Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
  • Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
  • Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
  • Meets daily productivity goals.
  • Maintains JCAHPO certifications.
  • Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.
  • Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
  • Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
  • Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
  • Works evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Performs organizational duties as assigned.
  • Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.
  • Facilitates motility exams.
  • Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.
  • Performs imaging including but not limited to fundus photos, OCTs, and Slit Lamp exams.
  • Assists with training and onboarding clinical support staff.
  • Acts as a super-user for technology implementations, optimizations, and training initiatives.
  • Acts as preceptor and trainer for team members.
  • Serves as a lead technician providing oversight to clinical teams when assigned.
  • The Ophthalmic Technician II is able to effectively perform appropriate clinical testing and understands the theory, principles and practice of eye care.
  • The duties will include proper documentation/completion in the EMR system, in compliance with department standards.
  • The Ophthalmic Technician II tasks include but are not limited to performing the following procedures on patients of all ages, Elicitation and recording of all elements of history that are required by external authorities and/or department regulations.
  • Visual acuity measurement with: Digital visual acuity system or projector chart E-card Near point cards Hand motion techniques, including directionality Light perception with and without projection.
  • Pinhole g. Brightness Acuity Tester (BAT) h. Interferometry Measurement of the optical characteristics of spectacle lenses with the manual lensometer and/or auto lensometer.
  • Retinoscopy Keratometry: traditional, auto, and photokeratoscopy Refraction: using phoropter, auto refractor, cycloplegic, and trial frame at distance and near Amsler grid assessment Confrontation visual fields- HVF Pupillary evaluation Biomicroscopy: General examination and Von Herrick chamber angle estimation Ocular surface dysfunction assessment.
