About The Position

Under general supervision, the Ophthalmic Tech I assists physicians with the examination, diagnosis, education, and treatment of patients. This position performs ophthalmic testing, obtains patient histories, assists with office procedures, provides patient education, coordinates scheduling activities, and maintains clinical equipment to support efficient and high-quality patient care.

Requirements

One year or more of clinical experience in ophthalmology, optometry, or healthcare
Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and clinical staff
Basic computer and documentation skills
Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professional standards
Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and assist patients throughout the workday
Ability to use computers and ophthalmic diagnostic equipment for extended periods
Ability to perform repetitive hand movements associated with clinical testing and documentation
Visual acuity sufficient to perform ophthalmic testing and interpret diagnostic information
Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment while maintaining attention to detail

Nice To Haves

Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification preferred or willingness to obtain certification within one year of employment
Experience obtaining OCTs, fundus photography, and visual field testing
Previous experience in an ophthalmology or specialty clinic setting

Responsibilities

Place patients in examination rooms and obtain detailed medical and ocular histories
Determine and document the reason for the patient's visit
Assess visual acuity, pupils, extraocular movements, muscle function, and other ophthalmic measurements
Obtain blood pressure when indicated
Dilation of pupils as appropriate and within established guidelines
Present patient history summaries and communicate significant findings to physicians
Assist with office procedures including chalazion excisions, refractions, and tear duct probes
Document examination findings and treatment results accurately in patient charts
Educate patients regarding physician instructions, eye drops, contact lenses, medications, and surgical procedures
Answer patient questions in person and by telephone
Schedule surgeries, coordinate with surgical centers, prepare charts, consent forms, and pre-admission documentation
Schedule consultations with other healthcare providers as required
Order contact lenses, process prescriptions, and assist with refill requests under physician direction
Maintain knowledge of ICD-10 diagnosis coding, CPT procedure coding, and reimbursement requirements
Operate and maintain ophthalmic equipment including Lensometer, Humphrey Visual Field Machine, Brightness Acuity Test equipment, Autorefractor, Phoropter, and Tonopen
Perform refractions and contact lens fittings
Maintain clinical equipment, supplies, and inventory
Perform other duties as assigned
Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner
Promote a culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, reporting, documentation, and prevention practices
Maintain hospital standards for a clean and patient-centered environment
Maintain competency and knowledge of current ophthalmic practices, trends, and developments
Adhere to infection control policies, medication storage procedures, and regulatory requirements
Participate in quality improvement activities
