About The Position

This position involves working under the supervision of experienced ophthalmic professionals to learn essential skills and techniques for diagnosing and treating eye conditions. The trainee will shadow and learn from a certified technician, performing preliminary diagnostic tests, assisting with patient preparation for eye exams, and recording patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR) system. Responsibilities also include observing and assisting with imaging tests, handling and maintaining ophthalmic equipment, educating patients, sterilizing equipment, maintaining accurate records, adhering to safety protocols, attending training, and performing clinical-clerical office duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous healthcare or clinical experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Shadow and learn essential skills and techniques used to diagnose and treat eye conditions under the guidance and supervision of a certified technician.
  • Perform preliminary diagnostic tests, including visual acuity testing, tonometry, and refraction.
  • Assist in preparing patients for eye exams by conducting preliminary tests (e.g., visual acuity, tonometry, pupil dilation, neutralize glasses, automated refractions, pupillary exams, confrontational fields, ocular motility, intraocular pressure).
  • Record patient medical histories, symptoms, and test results accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  • Observe and assist in conducting imaging tests such as OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) and visual field testing.
  • Handle and maintain ophthalmic equipment and instruments properly under the guidance and supervision of a certified technician.
  • Educate patients about procedures, instructions for eye care, and follow-up appointments.
  • Sterilize and clean equipment and exam rooms according to established procedures.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and ensure proper documentation of services.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety protocols.
  • Attend training sessions and workshops to improve skills and knowledge in ophthalmology.
  • Perform clinical-clerical office duties, including scheduling, completing request forms, printing results, ordering contact lenses, and related administrative activities.
  • Stock rooms according to practice needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
