About The Position

The Ophthalmic Technician 1 performs skilled duties related to the eye. This position assists the physician and is part of the health care team for ocular health.

Requirements

  • Basic understanding of Ophthalmic Care modalities, therapies, terminology, medications and equipment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills as well as a neat professional appearance.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers, family of patients, doctors, and patients.
  • Requires flexibility to handle multiple ongoing tasks.
  • Must maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA guidelines.
  • Basic computer skills, including but not limited to: typing, information security, electronic medical documentation, hand held scanning and email.
  • H.S. Diploma/GED Equivalent
  • Less than 1 Year of Experience

Nice To Haves

  • Must have at least 1 year of optometry experience

Responsibilities

  • Initiates and documents the patient's chief complaint, history of present illness, medical history, review of systems, and pertinent ocular findings accurately. Follows compliance guidelines.
  • Performs testing including visual acuity measurement, lensometry, pupil function testing, ocular motility, tonometry, and confrontation visual field testing. Provides other patient services as requested by the ophthalmologist.
  • Performs refractometry; manual manifest refraction to draft preliminary glasses prescription.
  • Performs various specialty tests ordered by a physician, such as pachymetry, Brightness Acuity Test (BAT), Potential Acuity Meter (PAM), and color vision testing.
  • Assists with minor surgeries, intraocular injections, and laser treatments. Prepares patients for sterile procedures in exam or treatment rooms.
  • Educates patient regarding the administration of medications, and pre and post operative instructions, as directed by physician.
  • Handles specimens, biopsies and culture materials safely.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic and oral medications at the direction of a physician.
  • Opens and closes exam lanes. Ensures equipment is cleaned and disinfected. Makes sure battery-powered instruments are seated properly in recharge wells. Ensures lamps and projectors are switched off and under covers.
