About The Position

The Surgery Scrub Technician is responsible for performing the duties of a scrub technician and assists in the operative procedure by preparation of unsterile equipment and supplies.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years as Ophthalmic Surgery Scrub Technician
  • Current CPR certification – required
  • Knowledge in fundamentals of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, sterilization procedures, aseptic techniques, and maintenance and care of equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of surgical procedures, needs, and steps in use of materials.
  • Experience scrubbing ophthalmic surgeries (particularly cataracts), oculoplastics, plastics, skin excisions, and general surgeries.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Surgical Technologist – preferred

Responsibilities

  • Functions as a scrub technician in the operating room.
  • Assists with gowning and gloving other members of the surgical team.
  • Assists with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures.
  • Assists with skin preparations and with draping of patients.
  • Assists with care, preparation, maintenance, and after-care of sterile and unsterile supplies and equipment.
  • Knows and practices the principles and techniques of sterile technique.
  • Handles specimens in accordance with procedures.
  • Removes drapes at end of procedure, cleanses the patient of prep solution and applies dressing as needed.
  • Cleans instruments and equipment after use and returns them to proper area for storage processing.
  • Respects patient's right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Differentiates sterilization methods required for specific instruments and equipment.
  • Helps maintain supplies including participating in monthly outdates and yearly inventory count.
  • Participates as delegated in various committee functions.
  • Assists with housekeeping duties as necessary to provide a safe environment.
  • Participates in sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating nurse as deemed necessary.
  • Demonstrates ability to understand and use autoclaves, sonic cleaner and washer/disinfector.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-service programs.
  • Participates in departmental conferences, orientation of new personnel and in-service programs as assigned.
  • Assists with stocking, replenishing, and preparation of supplies.
  • Updates knowledge in surgical techniques and related nursing care.
  • Recognizes legal and policy limits of individual responsibility.
  • Performs all other duties assigned by supervisor.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Cleans equipment.
  • Changes work schedule as required by Nurse Manager to adjust for special needs, absences, and other unexpected occurrences.
  • Implements safety precautions and provides continual vigilance against accidents, fire, theft, vandalism, harm, and inappropriate use of supplies and equipment.
  • Handles and disposes of biohazardous waste appropriately.
