About The Position

An Ophthalmic Photographer is a valuable asset to an Ophthalmologist, assisting in providing excellent patient care during visits. This role involves handling a wide range of duties, including using equipment to perform initial testing to prepare patients for exams. Ophthalmic Photographers utilize ophthalmic techniques for patient examination and work-up in a clinic setting, and directly provide Physicians with high-quality photographs that document and illustrate patient pathology or anomaly.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook.

Nice To Haves

  • Highly encouraged to obtain certification as Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA).
  • Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform Color stereo Retinal Fundus photography and Serial Stereo Retinal Intravenous Fluorescein Angiography, including IV start up and dye administration.
  • Perform External ocular photography and OCT on patients with speed and accuracy; may assist Physician(s) with treatments when needed.
  • Utilize ophthalmic terminology, type words accurately with speed, and demonstrate knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system; may be required to Scribe for Physicians if needed.
  • Review patient’s past and current medical and ophthalmic history, including information regarding medications, allergies and family history of eye problems.
  • Identify any potential patient concerns and bring these issues to the attention of the Office Coordinator or Physician as appropriate.
  • Measure and record both distance and near visual acuity and pinhole acuity; perform preliminary refraction using objective equipment.
  • Measure intraocular pressures by applanation tonometry, pneumatonometry and/or use of tonopen and check pupillary response to light and pupillary defects.
  • Perform basic visual field testing and patient education as directed by Physician.
  • Prepare patients for treatments and minor procedures; measure and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate) as required.
  • Instill eye drops as directed by the Physician and assist in the application of dressings, shields and eye patches.
  • Keep examination, treatment, laser and any other assigned rooms cleaned and stocked with supplies, medication logs and inventories up to date.
  • Become certified for photography services required for study participation.
  • Be responsible for the proper handling of all equipment related to job and assist with equipment maintenance and repairs when necessary.
  • Utilize proficient keyboarding skills, Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and image management system.
  • Utilize electronic mail and other instant messaging systems.
  • May consent patient for treatment and procedures.
  • Provide consistent, excellent customer service.
  • Assist with patient transfers as necessary.
  • Travel to other locations as assigned.
