About The Position

The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for providing the highest quality ophthalmic patient care possible. The Ophthalmic Technician performs patient histories, completes requested ophthalmic testing and consistently provides superior customer service for the patients. The Ophthalmic Technician ensures the proper utilization of time and movement of the patient throughout the patient visit. Please note that this job description is not exhaustive, and additional duties may be as assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Must have proficient computer skills

  • Must have a complete knowledge of all forms (paper & electronic) that are used in the practice
  • Must have an understanding of the anatomy & physiology of the eye
  • Must have an understanding of ophthalmic terminology, spelling, and pronunciation
  • Must have an understanding of CPT and ICD-9/10 codes for ophthalmic billing
  • The Ophthalmic Technician must be able to travel to various satellite locations as needed for work assignments.
  • A valid Florida driver’s license is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor Degree or Associate Degree in a related field highly preferred
  • Two (2) years of ophthalmology experience preferred
  • Must complete the home study ophthalmic program within six months of hire
  • Prefer COT Certification

Responsibilities

  • Consistently performs proper documentation of case history, confrontation visual fields, pupil evaluation, screening extra-ocular muscle function, visual acuity, assessment of angle depth, instillation of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents, amsler grid and other functions as directed by the clinical physician
  • Obtains eyeglass prescriptions via lensometer
  • Performs patient testing accurately and effectively as directed by the clinical provider(s) i.e. Slit Lamp Exam, PAMS, Visual Fields, Color Test, Tonometry, OCT’s, Fundus Photos, etc.
  • If assigned to an ophthalmologist: must be able to refract within +/- .50 diopters
  • If assigned to a retina specialist: assists retina physician(s) with intraocular injections as needed
  • Effectively communicates physician instructions to patients and documents accordingly
  • Assists the physician with pharmacy calls, patient calls, etc.
  • Ensures the scheduling template is being followed correctly
  • Ensures all patient lanes are clean and well-stocked at the end of each day
  • Ensures all equipment is turned off and covered properly at the end of day
  • Completes tech station duties on a daily basis
  • Call in Rx’s – Only certified ophthalmic techs can ERx. The exception is the tech can ERx if scribing for a doctor and the script is done under the doctor’s name
  • Must have an understanding of sterile technique
  • Exhibits professional demeanor with a positive enthusiastic attitude at all times when representing the practice
  • Maintains certification, where applicable, and continues to improve skills. Must attend in-services and webinar training seminars as directed by the Clinical Manager
  • Sets goals and objectives for professional growth. Reviews and revises goals on an ongoing basis
  • Provides input on how to improve customer service, decrease costs and increase revenues for the practice
  • Supports the practice core values and mission statement to develop, enhance, and promote quality customer service through team effort
  • Exhibits flexibility, sensitivity and respect while maintaining an effective working relationship with all team members
  • Maintains practice confidentiality, follows HIPAA guidelines
  • Follows the rules and regulations of the practice as documented in the practice employee manual
  • Completes any additional tasks and responsibilities as noted in the pay for performance program
  • Maintains proper work-up standards of productivity as defined by physician requirements, patient diagnosis, and Clinical Manager
  • Assumes other duties as assigned
