About The Position

McFarland Clinic is hiring an Ophthalmic Assistant for its Ames Eye Care Center. The role supports eye care providers by preparing patients for exams and treatments, performing basic screening procedures, collecting medical information, administering medications, and assisting with minor and laser surgery. The candidate should be an energetic team player who is willing to learn basic ophthalmic techniques and how to use advanced ophthalmic equipment. On-the-job training is available. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or HiSET.
• Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to multitask.
• Keyboard and computer experience.
• Pre-employment drug screening and criminal history background checks are conditions of hire.

Nice To Haves

• Graduation from an accredited Ophthalmic Assistant program.
• Ophthalmic experience; not required, and on-the-job training is available.
• One year of work experience in a medical office setting.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for exams or treatments.
• Take visual acuity measurements and perform basic screening tests.
• Take brief patient histories and other necessary medical information.
• Administer necessary medications.
• Order laboratory and X-ray procedures.
• Set up and assist with minor surgery and laser surgery.
• Perform other duties as directed by the provider.
