About The Position

The Ophthalmic Assistant will greet patients professionally and courteously, obtain and document pertinent medical and ophthalmic patient history. This role involves basic clinical and diagnostic testing responsibilities, assisting physicians or optometrists with clinical procedures, administering eye drops and oral medications, and inserting/removing contacts. The assistant will triage patients based on appointment time and problem acuity, prepare patients for the doctor, and maintain an efficient clinic flow. Travel between offices may be required. Adherence to all administrative and clinical practice policies and procedures is expected. Responsibilities include maintaining efficient patient flow, keeping patients informed of wait times, providing accurate documentation, educating patients before and after procedures, and ensuring medical records are in order and secured.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Active CPR/BLS through an AHA accredited program or agency.
  • Proficiency using a computer.
  • Proficiency using a lensometer.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of COA or COT Training Program.
  • 6 months to a year of experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Obtain and document pertinent medical and ophthalmic patient history.
  • Perform basic diagnostic tests accurately.
  • Assist physician or optometrist with clinical procedures.
  • Administer eye drops and oral medications.
  • Insert and remove contacts.
  • Triage patients appropriately based on appointment time and acuity of problem.
  • Prepare patient for doctor and maintain smooth, efficient flow throughout clinic.
  • Travel between offices as needed to staff other clinics.
  • Adhere to all administrative and clinical practice policies and procedures.
  • Maintain efficient patient flow in exam area and keep patient informed of waiting status.
  • Provide accurate and consistent documentation.
  • Provide education to patients before and after procedures in terms they can understand, providing written instructions as available.
  • Ensure that all medical records are in appropriate order, secured in the chart and each page contains patients full name and birthday before returning to medical records.
  • Obtain patient history.
  • Accurately test patients distance acuity, near acuity, confrontation visual fields, stereo and color testing.
  • Perform lensometry on single, bifocal, and progressive lenses as well as transposition accurately with minimal guidance.
  • Perform Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer accurately.
  • Perform refractometry with minimal assistance.
  • Have a basic understanding of ophthalmic medications including name, strength, dosage and reason for use.
  • May be assigned ASC duties as appropriate, ranging from Provider assistance to running of lasers or related items.
  • Correctly perform the following procedures without supervision: Keratometry (ARK); IOL Master; Pachymetry; Topography; Check angles with slit lamp; Identify pupil abnormalities and perform careful pupil measurements.
