The Ophthalmic Assistant will perform preliminary screenings as ordered by a physician, including obtaining detailed patient medical/ocular histories, visual acuity, tonometry, lensometry, pupil exam, instilling ocular medication, and visual field testing. This role is responsible for maintaining assigned ophthalmic exam lanes and equipment, ensuring exam rooms are clean, stocked, and well-maintained. The Ophthalmic Assistant will interact professionally and courteously with patients, families, coworkers, and physicians, always maintaining patient confidentiality and contributing to a positive workplace atmosphere. Professional development is key, including maintaining required competencies, continuing education hours according to JCAHPO guidelines, and current CPR certification. Under physician direction, may perform prescription refills following standard guidelines. This position serves as a role model for quality patient care and performs other duties incidental to the work described based on certification level.
