Under the direction of the Ophthalmologist and associated medical staff of Cook County Health (CCH), the Ophthalmic Technician provides technical guidance and assistance to support the evaluation, treatment, and management of patients receiving eye care. This role involves using comprehensive knowledge to train staff on how to handle and use equipment accurately, and acting as a liaison between the patient and Ophthalmologist, with the ability to identify and respond to emergency situations professionally. Typical duties include reviewing charts, collecting medical history, documenting information, applying eye drops, performing various patient care tests such as tonometry, refractometry, corneal topography, keratometry, and pachymetry, recording data, providing patient education, designing care plans, checking and preparing equipment, maintaining sterile technique, managing inventory, and ensuring HIPAA compliance. The technician is also responsible for attending mandatory training, maintaining licensure/certification, adhering to policies, and traveling to CCH work sites.
