About The Position

This position is for an Operator Trainee at Hunt Refining Company. The role involves learning and performing various operational duties within the refinery, with a strong emphasis on safety, communication, and adherence to procedures. The trainee will gain knowledge of safety policies, equipment, process streams, and emergency procedures. They will also learn to effectively communicate with team members, document activities, and troubleshoot operational issues. The role requires continuous learning and development to become proficient in all aspects of refinery operations.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Capable of performing basic maintenance tasks.
  • Must have the initiative to work toward refinery goals.
  • Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot operations problems.
  • Has a good working relationship with Unit Leaders, Console and Field Operators, Operations Specialists, Shift Superintendents Area Superintendents, and Engineers.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Proficiently utilizes and navigates software required to complete the daily, routine business of HRC.
  • Must be able to be certified to use respiratory protection, including fresh air work requiring a full-face mask and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) weighing up to 35 lbs.
  • Use of SCBA requires sufficient pulmonary and respiratory health and may preclude full beards or other obstructions preventing an adequate facial fit.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Emergency Drill Parties.
  • Learn and apply Hunt Refining Company’s safety policies, including LOTO.
  • Identify locations of safety equipment and hazards associated with process streams, chemicals, and operating equipment.
  • Access Safety Data Sheet Information.
  • Respond to callouts and emergency situations.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the unit and equipment.
  • Become proficient with power failure and field-related emergency procedures.
  • Provide concise and accurate shift turnover summaries.
  • Communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and electronically, including via radio and email.
  • Read and follow all applicable guidelines, procedures, and training.
  • Review unit operations from previous shifts via logs and electronic communication.
  • Communicate process variations affecting other areas.
  • Record daily activities and adjustments in the electronic log.
  • Stay up-to-date with online EHS, procedure refresher, and security training.
  • Locate all written policies, procedures, and Company documents on the Company Intranet.
  • Continually improve process and safety knowledge.
  • Learn equipment descriptions and locations.
  • Support and participate in OJT and training in the Unit Processing area.
  • Learn unit trips, set points, and permissives to restart after a safety system is activated.
  • Assist Console Operator and Unit Leader in troubleshooting.
  • Minimize hydrocarbon and excess water to the water treatment plant.
  • Seek clarification for unclear or conflicting guidelines and procedures.
  • Work diligently to meet guideline targets and refinery goals.
  • Ensure unit and equipment are operated within specified limits.
  • Perform any task requested by supervision.
  • Write work orders and notify the Unit Leader.
  • Learn safe heater lighting steps and BMS panel operation and trips.
  • Provide feedback to the Console Operator when lighting heaters.
  • Positively address operating or personnel issues.
  • Learn to isolate and prepare all field equipment for maintenance.
  • Perform needed maintenance on shift as necessary.
  • Obtain samples for the lab.
  • Routinely sample process gases for H2S.
  • Make routine field adjustments to maintain process conditions (flows, levels, pressures, temperatures).
  • Take inventory of lube oil and chemicals and order as needed.
  • Blow down level glasses or float chambers to check a level.
  • Check cooling tower screens and have them cleaned as necessary.
  • Adjust boiler's continuous blow down line and perform daily manual blow down.
  • Maintain chemical injection rates into process streams.
  • Monitor lab reports and set/maintain chemical addition or proper treatment of boiler feed water and cooling tower water.
  • Check steam traps, steam tracing, and water for proper winterization.
  • Check color on product streams.
  • Monitor fin-fans for freeze protection.
  • Control water or hydrocarbon accumulation levels by periodic draining.
  • Switch pumps, purge or switch compressors online without interruption of the process.
  • Start/stop or reset electric motors.
  • Put control valves on bypass.
  • Perform heater activities including using snuffing steam, purging heaters, lighting pilots and burners, adjusting air registers and dampers, using O2 analyzer for efficiency, and inspecting heater boxes.
  • Check DCS indications against local instruments to verify readings.
  • Take inventory of Nitrogen (N2) bottles and report needs.
  • Bypass water softener system when necessary.
  • Line up city water and well water.
  • Light and adjust steam to the flare and check K/O drums.
  • Line up charge tanks and product rundown to various product tanks and line up slop lines.
  • Establish alternate cooling in the glycol circulation system for compressor cooling.
  • Troubleshoot all treated water fixed equipment.
  • Check operating equipment (Pumps, Compressors, Fans) for abnormal conditions (noise, temperature, pressure, vibration, leaks, lubrication, etc.) and report to Unit Leader.
