About The Position

This role involves learning and performing various operational duties within a refinery setting. The Operator Trainee will be responsible for safety procedures, effective communication, understanding and following operational procedures, and performing hands-on tasks related to equipment operation and maintenance. The position requires continuous learning and development to become proficient in all aspects of refinery operations and safety protocols.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Capable of performing basic maintenance tasks.
  • Initiative to work toward refinery goals.
  • Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot operations problems.
  • Good working relationship with Unit Leaders, Console and Field Operators, Operations Specialists, Shift Superintendents, Area Superintendents, and Engineers.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Proficiently utilizes and navigates software required to complete daily business.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Emergency Drill Parties.
  • Learn and apply Hunt Refining Company’s safety policies, including LOTO.
  • Identify locations of safety equipment and emergency response resources.
  • Understand hazards associated with process streams, chemicals, and operating equipment.
  • Learn how to access Safety Data Sheet Information.
  • Respond to callouts and emergency situations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and hazard-free conditions of units and equipment.
  • Become proficient with power failure and field-related emergency procedures.
  • Provide concise and accurate verbal summaries of shift activities to relief personnel.
  • Communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and electronically.
  • Communicate clearly over the radio.
  • Check email periodically throughout the shift.
  • Read and follow all applicable guidelines, procedures, and MOCs.
  • Review unit operations from previous shifts by reading logs and electronic communication.
  • Communicate process variations affecting other areas.
  • Record daily activities and adjustments in the electronic log.
  • Stay up-to-date with online EHS, procedure refresher, and security training.
  • Locate all written policies, procedures, and Company documents on the Company Intranet.
  • Continually improve process and safety knowledge.
  • Learn equipment descriptions and their locations.
  • Support and participate in OJT and training in the Unit Processing area.
  • Learn unit trips, set points, and permissives to restart after safety system activation.
  • Assist Console Operator and Unit Leader in troubleshooting.
  • Minimize hydrocarbon and excess water to the water treatment plant.
  • Seek clarification when guidelines and procedures are unclear or conflicting.
  • Work towards meeting guideline targets and refinery goals.
  • Ensure unit and equipment are operated within specified limits.
  • Perform tasks requested by supervision.
  • Write work orders and notify the Unit Leader.
  • Learn safe heater lighting steps and BMS panel operation.
  • Address operating or personnel issues positively.
  • Learn to isolate and prepare field equipment for maintenance.
  • Perform needed maintenance on shift as necessary.
  • Obtain samples for the lab as necessary.
  • Routinely sample process gases for H2S.
  • Make routine field adjustments to maintain process conditions (flows, levels, pressures, temperatures).
  • Take inventory of lube oil and chemicals and order as needed.
  • Blow down level glasses or float chambers to check levels.
  • Check cooling tower screens and have them cleaned as necessary.
  • Adjust boiler blowdown lines and perform manual blowdowns.
  • Maintain chemical injection rates into process streams.
  • Monitor lab reports and set/maintain chemical addition or treatment for boiler feed water and cooling tower water.
  • Check steam traps, steam tracing, and water for proper winterization.
  • Check color on product streams as necessary.
  • Monitor fin-fans for freeze protection in cold weather.
  • Control water or hydrocarbon accumulation levels by periodic draining.
  • Switch pumps, purge or switch compressors online without interruption of the process.
  • Start/stop or reset electric motors as necessary.
  • Put control valves on bypass as necessary.
  • Perform heater activities including purging, lighting pilots, adjusting air registers and dampers, and inspecting heater boxes.
  • Check DCS indications against local instruments to verify readings.
  • Take inventory of Nitrogen (N2) bottles and report needs.
  • Bypass water softener system when necessary.
  • Line up city water and well water as necessary.
  • Light and adjust steam to the flare and check K/O drums.
  • Line up charge tanks and product rundown to various product tanks and line up slop lines.
  • Establish alternate cooling in the glycol circulation system for compressor cooling, as necessary.
  • Troubleshoot all treated water fixed equipment.
  • Check operating equipment for abnormal conditions (Pumps, Compressors, Fans) and report to Unit Leader.
