About The Position

Under the direction of the team leader, the packaging operator is responsible to operate, monitor and adjust the packaging equipment in a manner consistent with production needs and quality standards. This role involves maintaining safe work practices, monitoring line flow rates, ordering packaging materials, and ensuring the quality and efficiency of various packaging machines including baggers, dyna-packs, case settlers, and case sealers. The operator will also monitor the ink-jet coder, maintain line sanitation, and accurately record machinery efficiencies and downtime. Additionally, the role requires troubleshooting equipment operation, reworking product, and providing direction to other employees as needed.

Requirements

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English.

• Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 90 pounds with assistance.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

• Maintains safe work practices at all times and participates in safety programs.
• Monitors line-flow rates and ensures proper feed of product through baggers for maximum efficiency.
• Monitors and adjusts vibrators to gain optimum bagger performance.
• Orders packaging material (paper, poly, carton) from storage as needed.
• Monitors bagger operation, ensuring adequate product feed for efficient running.
• Checks bag weights and adjusts to meet Q.A. standards.
• Changes tape and wires on jaws and changes paper and poly rolls.
• Checks poly codes with Q.A. and continuously monitors for accuracy.
• Monitors dyna-pack operation, adjusting for different fiber and chair settings, and supplying COPs with fiber.
• Adjusts bag settlers as needed to minimize breakage.
• Monitors case settler operation and adjusts for different fiber.
• Monitors headspace on cases and adjusts settings accordingly (compression, time and height).
• Monitors case sealer operation, adjusts for different fiber, and monitors and adjusts glue patterns.
• Changes glue heads as needed and ensures proper sanitation and operation.
• Monitors Ink-jet coder, programs proper code statement, and adjusts for optimum code placement and clarity on case.
• Monitors line sanitation, keeping baggers clean of crumbs, cleaning take-away belts, floors, and the run-around system.
• Ensures all packaging is clean and food safe.
• Ensures proper container sizing.
• Records packaging machinery efficiencies, downtime and fills out reports accurately and correctly.
• Responsible for insuring complete package quality of product taking regular checks of weights, seals, codes, glue patterns, etc.
• Completes CIL’s and Centerlines.
• Participates in AMD Drumbeats.
• Troubleshoots equipment operation, identifying mechanical and electrical equipment problems and taking action by notifying proper personnel.
• Operates equipment with minimum waste.
• Reworks product in an expeditious manner reusing fiber when appropriate.
• Gives other employees breaks as directed by the team leader.
• Instructs packaging laborers, general laborers and temporary employees where and how to work to insure efficient operation of the packaging room as directed by the team leader.
