About The Position

The Operator I, Transportation Operations (Asphalt) performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties supporting the construction, maintenance, repair, and upkeep of asphalt streets, alleys, and related transportation infrastructure. The position operates and maintains heavy equipment such as dump trucks, skid steers, front-end loaders, backhoes, paving equipment, street sweepers, and other equipment used for asphalt preparation, placement, patching, repair, and roadway cleanup. Responsibilities include identifying and repairing deteriorated or eroded pavement, preparing work areas, removing roadway debris, assisting with asphalt paving and maintenance activities, and supporting traffic control and work-zone safety. The Operator I also performs routine equipment maintenance, records daily work activities, responds to emergency and after-hours roadway needs, and may assist with snow removal and other transportation operations as assigned. The position requires a strong commitment to safety, the ability to work outdoors and in varying conditions, operate a variety of heavy equipment, follow maps and work plans, perform basic computer data entry, and work effectively as part of a transportation operations team.

Requirements

  • Ability to work on call, overtime, and after hours as needed.
  • Ability to read maps and blueprints.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of heavy equipment and/or vehicles.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills.
  • Knowledge of general vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to successfully pass applicable Post Offer Employment Physical Test.
  • Ability to perform basic math functions.
  • Ability to adhere to safety requirements and identify safety concerns and improvements
  • Minimum age 18.
  • Valid Driver's License, Class B Commercial Driver License Preferred.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations require that the individual(s) selected for this position must successfully pass a controlled substance test, as well as a DOT physical examination.
  • Current City employees transferring from a non-safety sensitive position to a safety sensitive position will be required to successfully pass these tests and the physical examination.

  • 0-2 years related experience.
  • May require Workzone Certification within a reasonable time frame from time of hire.
  • May require IMSA Level I certification within a reasonable time frame from hire.
  • May require Class A CDL for some assignments.
  • May require commercial pesticide application license within a reasonable time frame from time of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains equipment which may include front-end loader, bulldozer, skid steer, dump truck, backhoe, farm tractors, pavement marking & sign equipment, street sweeper, paving equipment, mowing or other vegetation management equipment, and other heavy equipment as needed.
  • Patch broken or eroded pavement; remove debris from roadway.
  • May construct and maintain pavement markings / signs, and signals and participate in traffic control activities.
  • Perform snow removal and operate snow removal equipment.
  • Input daily work data into a computer.
  • Perform general building maintenance.
  • May train and oversee other operators or hourly employees.
  • Shift work and emergency responses activities may be required.
