About The Position

The Greater Chicago Food Depository is seeking a full-time Operations Worker to join their team in Chicago, IL. This role involves a variety of tasks within the warehouse, including receiving, shipping, and repackaging food products. The Operations Worker will be responsible for ensuring the accurate and safe handling of inventory, operating equipment, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment. This position requires physical fitness, attention to detail, and the ability to work in various temperature conditions, including refrigerated and freezer zones. The role also involves interacting with staff, volunteers, and member agencies.

Requirements

  • Experience operating material handling equipment, including forklifts and pallet jacks.
  • Physically fit, able to move quickly/easily.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Job requires being on your feet (standing or walking) six to eight hours.
  • Ability to bend, squat, twist/turn; repetitive hand/wrist motions; reach above shoulder.
  • Ability to manually load and unload freight from motor vehicles.
  • Experience operating hand or electric pallet jacks.
  • Ability to work in and outdoors in any weather, including cold storage and/or walk in freezer.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Ability to process shipping document paperwork.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented and able to prioritize.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office- Word, Excel, Access, Outlook.
  • Covid vaccination required for employment.

Responsibilities

  • Fill out safety inspection checklists for all power equipment.
  • Operate forklifts and pallet jacks to off-load incoming product.
  • Re-warehouse products, checking for infestation, code dates, temperatures, damage, and sanitation.
  • Verify, count, and/or weigh incoming loads and compare to bill of lading documents.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records for department transactions.
  • Work closely with Inventory Control to ensure accurate recording of received products and assist with resolving inventory issues.
  • Apply basic math and computer skills.
  • Work in refrigerated and freezer zone temperatures.
  • Safely direct trucks into docks and secure them for safe unloading.
  • Inspect loads for infestation, product code date expiration, product damage, and quality control issues.
  • Pick and stage orders in the shipping dock, checking agency orders against warehouse release/shipping documents.
  • Ensure warehouse release/shipping documents are accurately completed.
  • Assist in the loading of agency orders and the loading of vehicles for distribution.
  • Ensure proper equipment is loaded for routes.
  • Assist driver with loading donations and unloading products.
  • Take an active role in the replenishment process.
  • Pick and palletize stock coded product using order picklists.
  • Stage palletized orders in assigned areas.
  • Retrieve, stage, store, and re-warehouse processed and finished products using forklift equipment and manual and electric pallet jacks.
  • Prepare damaged product reports.
  • Conduct inventory cycle counts to reconcile physical inventories.
  • Ensure all equipment is in its assigned location and charging at the end of the day.
  • Assist with end of day warehouse cleaning.
  • Work closely with volunteers and the volunteer engagement team.
  • Address and present instructions clearly to large groups of volunteers and lead project sessions.
  • Sort, clean, pack and re-pack dry, refrigerated, or frozen products on salvage or repack production lines.
  • Maintain salvage line in accordance with sanitation, quality control, and safety standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of work area and all assigned material handling equipment.
  • Report any damage to product, trailers, or equipment to management immediately.
  • Keep detailed records of inventory handled throughout sessions and record input and output of inventory projects.
  • Perform other responsibilities in other sections of operations as assigned.
