Interstate Waste Services (IWS) is a leading provider of solid waste and recycling services in the greater New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut markets, operating a rail-served landfill in Ohio. The Operations Supervisor II is responsible for overseeing collections activities across one or more lines of business (commercial, residential, roll-off, and container delivery pick up). This role involves managing drivers and helpers, collaborating with the Operations Hauling Manager to implement tactical initiatives for functional excellence and budget achievement. The Supervisor ensures compliance with all accident prevention programs and leads operations to meet safety, environmental, operating, regulatory, accounting, ethics, and other standards. Key responsibilities include executing and delivering on Safety, Customer Experience, and Efficiency goals, while fostering a culture of employee engagement.

Requirements

  • 3-8 years of experience in waste management operations
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience in waste management, transportation, and/or logistics services
  • Experience with route optimization and efficiency improvement
  • Knowledge of DOT requirements for commercial vehicles
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Outlook and basic Excel)
  • Desire and ability to learn the company’s software applications
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Defensive Driving (Smith System 5 Keys)

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Business, Logistics, or related field preferred or equivalent in work experience
  • Knowledge of PowerBI preferred

Responsibilities

  • Supervising the collections activities in one or more lines of business (commercial, residential, roll-off and container delivery pick up)
  • Managing drivers and helpers
  • Working with the Operations Hauling Manager to implement tactical initiatives to drive functional excellence and budget achievement
  • Ensuring adherence to all accident prevention programs
  • Leading operations to ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, operating, regulatory, accounting, ethics and other standards
  • Executing and delivering of Safety, Customer Experience, and Efficiency while supporting a culture of employee engagement
  • Checking in Drivers and helpers ensuring they are fit for duty, in uniform, and have proper PPE
  • Understanding and providing leadership to achieve and communicate about safety goals and objectives
  • Analyzing drivers’ routes to assess any unsafe conditions and work with the sales and dispatch team to remove unsafe conditions identified
  • Partnering with the maintenance department to ensure all equipment remains in working order and in compliance with safety standards
  • Overseeing effective safety and accident prevention programs to ensure all reasonable actions are taken to prevent accidents and injuries
  • Ensuring a safe and productive work environment for all employees
  • Implementing and maintaining an effective safety program
  • Conducting route observations and coaching drivers on safe driving and monitoring progress
  • Engaging assigned employees in active participation to instill a culture of safety by demonstration of a personal commitment to safe operations and active personal outreach to operational employees
  • Monitoring telematic system for unsafe events (distracted driving, seatbelt use, speeding, etc) and coaching employees on unsafe driving behaviors
  • Performing route vehicle inspections – safety lane
  • Responding to vehicle accidents and conducting preliminary investigations
  • Surveying a new stop for safe service
  • Monitoring/supervising DVIR pre and post trip activities by driver
  • Ensuring adherence to DOT regulations, environmental compliance, and municipal ordinances
  • Maintaining accurate route documentation, service records, and regulatory paperwork
  • Providing service to all customers that meets or exceeds customer expectations with regard to the entire customer experience
  • Understanding missed pickup goals and meeting or exceeding expectations related to those goals
  • Resolving unusual service requests, equipment breakdowns and schedule changes with timely communications to all stakeholders
  • Interacting with customers to solve and rectify any issues and improve the overall customer experience
  • Communicating any changes/needs to the appropriate contact for Municipal work
  • Conducting onsite customer visits periodically
  • Serving as a positive representative of the Company to drive customer satisfaction and loyalty to the Company
  • Identifying, evaluating, and developing route assignments that are cost effective and meet business objectives
  • Providing detailed analysis of route performance to ensure all pickups are made and are done on a timely manner
  • Reviewing weight audit activity – following a truck
  • Conducting route audit to ensure we are not picking up cancelled customers
  • Working with Dispatch to manage door traffic
  • Monitoring employee attendance, punctuality, and performance
  • Verifying proper waste segregation and disposal procedures are followed
  • Creating a collaborative, communicative team environment and driving employee engagement with the Company
  • Building and developing talent on the team, understanding employees' career goals and providing coaching for advancement with the Company
