This position is responsible for the preparation and issuance of various permits for all non-utility work occupying the rights-of-way under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). These permits include access to state-maintained highways for small non-commercial entrances, to large-generator commercial developments, Oversize Overweight Permits, vertical clearance concerns, Parade and Event Permits, and miscellaneous permits requiring traffic control or other approvals for work to be performed within the IDOT rights-of-way. The position is directly responsible for archived plans and records reviews, consultant plan reviews, required permit documentation, and the inspection of construction work performed. The incumbent is required to meet with various property owners and developers, explain department policy and requirements, and maintain a good working relationship with the general public. The incumbent encounters varied field conditions that will necessitate on-site decision-making to determine alternative solutions and provide proper assistance to property owners while maintaining departmental policies. The work is to be done in the best interest of the motoring public, while at the same time protecting and maintaining the integrity of the department’s highway system.
