About The Position

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The Supervisor of Operations & Maintenance plays a critical role in supporting the maintenance and operation of building systems that enable patient care, research, and administrative functions across the organization. Within the facilities and maintenance environment, the Supervisor of Operations & Maintenance provides technical and administrative leadership to ensure reliable building operations and efficient service delivery. UT MD Anderson is home to complex healthcare facilities that require high-performing infrastructure and skilled operational leadership. The Supervisor of Operations & Maintenance oversees maintenance activities, workforce development, equipment reliability initiatives, and shop operations. The Supervisor of Operations & Maintenance serves as a key liaison between customers, maintenance teams, contractors, and leadership to support safe, efficient, and uninterrupted facility operations. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience working with commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems, preferably within a hospital or healthcare environment. Strong leadership and team supervision experience are highly desired, along with expertise in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, regulatory compliance requirements for healthcare facilities, and a Commercial HVAC license.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Five years in one or more craft areas including three years lead/supervisory experience.
  • Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Ability to work within the Microsoft Windows environment
  • Experience working within a CMMS environment.
  • Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
  • The ability to satisfy and maintain all requirements necessary to ensure the continued security and integrity of critical infrastructure is a condition of hire and continued employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or related field.
  • TDL - Texas Drivers License Valid and current Texas driver's license with a minimum of three year's history of verifiable driving history. With less than three years of driving history, but with a minimum of one year of driving history, a waiver may be requested.
  • Journeyman's license in one craft.

Responsibilities

  • Assess equipment needs and system reliability to support ongoing operations.
  • Develop and oversee preventive maintenance task sheets using OEM recommendations and industry best practices.
  • Document routine equipment work and preventive maintenance activities through CMMS updates.
  • Review and amend plans and drawings supporting upgrades and new construction projects.
  • Recommend improvements to operations, equipment performance, and facility conditions.
  • Provide experienced administrative and technical support for building maintenance and operational activities.
  • Coordinate and supervise designated shops and associated maintenance operations.
  • Support maintenance and operation of buildings, structures, systems, components, and utilities.
  • Coordinate scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities across assigned facilities.
  • Ensure continued operations for patient care, research, and administrative facilities.
  • Function as the front-line customer contact to ensure efficient delivery of maintenance services.
  • Support development and implementation of preventive maintenance programs.
  • Requisition tools, equipment, and supplies required for maintenance operations.
  • Implement performance improvement initiatives that enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Hire staff and manage personnel-related matters including promotions and salary recommendations.
  • Develop staff through cross-training, peer guidance, continuing education, and skill development.
  • Ensure training, safety compliance programs, and developmental programs are administered effectively.
  • Prepare and review employee performance evaluations in accordance with institutional requirements.
  • Coordinate efforts of journeyman and non-journeyman employees to support operational needs.
  • Lead and oversee HVAC/Refrigeration personnel while promoting quality workmanship and service standards.
  • Assist with development and management of departmental expense budgets for assigned accounts.
  • Prepare and execute capital repair and renewal requests in accordance with system requirements.
  • Plan and consult on equipment replacement projects and facility expansions.
  • Compose financial reports as required.
  • Oversee contracted work to ensure quality workmanship and adherence to institutional policies.
  • Act as the interim incident commander during emergency situations and coordinate response efforts.
  • Confer with management, engineering, and quality control teams to resolve maintenance issues.
  • Regularly carry a pager or communication device to answer questions and provide direction when needed.
  • Support operational continuity and response efforts across assigned facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
