About The Position

The Fairview Energy Center is among the world's most advanced natural gas combined cycle power plants. It features GE's Frame 7HA.02 Gas Turbines in conjunction with a GE Steam Turbine. In 2020, the facility received recognition as Power Magazine's Top U.S. Facility. Situated approximately 8 miles north of Johnstown and 87 miles east of Pittsburgh, the plant is nestled in the Laurel Highlands, known for its hardwood forests, pristine trout streams, and thriving whitetail deer population. The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician at the Fairview Energy Center operates, troubleshoots, and maintains all mechanical, I/C, and electrical equipment, including combined-cycle combustion turbines, HRSGs, and major auxiliary systems, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient plant performance. The technician monitors critical operational parameters, performs inspections and repairs, maintains precise logs, and collaborates with team members to drive optimal performance while upholding strict safety and environmental standards. Additionally, the technician advances preventive maintenance programs, mentors, and develops staff, manages work orders through the CMMS, supports budget control, and contributes to the continuous improvement of plant procedures.

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions related to the assigned area, typically acquired through four years of high school.
  • Relevant industry or military experience may be considered in lieu of education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Proven track record in technician roles within power generation, with hands-on experience in operating and maintaining combustion turbines, auxiliary systems, and combined cycle gas turbine systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in journeyman-level operations and mechanical systems, including startup, shutdown, and routine operations, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, and disassembling and reassembling plant components such as pumps, valves, and turbine-generators, as well as working with microprocessor and electronic systems.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of gas and steam turbine operations, Continuous Emission Monitoring (CEMS) systems, electrical systems, piping and instrument schematics, process controls, and inspection/recording of plant parameters.
  • Skilled in interpreting and troubleshooting complex technical documentation, including blueprints, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams, while documenting maintenance processes to ensure regulatory compliance and continuous improvement in equipment performance and reliability.
  • Thorough understanding of safety protocols, including Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures, OSHA requirements, and environmental compliance standards.
  • Proven ability to lead and coordinate cross-functional teams, contractors, and vendors, optimizing resources and ensuring timely project execution to support smooth plant operations and achieve maintenance objectives.
  • Able to work independently in a high-performance environment, demonstrating advanced problem-solving skills, strong technical writing and communication abilities, and the mathematical aptitude to convey complex concepts and solutions clearly.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct startup, shutdown, and routine operation of power plant systems, including combined-cycle combustion turbines and HRSGs.
  • Operate major auxiliary systems, such as air compressors, demineralized water systems, generator cooling systems, steam turbines, condensers, and locally controlled electrical and mechanical equipment, to ensure smooth facility operation.
  • Conduct operating tests, inspections, and minor repairs on assigned equipment to ensure proper functioning and prevent downtime.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain all mechanical, I/C, and electrical equipment to support plant operations and maximize shareholder value.
  • Prepare equipment for service according to operating procedures and safety protocols, maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Monitor and record operational parameters, such as equipment temperature, vibration, hours of operation, pressure, and fluid levels, using meters, gauges, or automatic devices to verify optimal conditions and identify potential issues.
  • Maintain accurate logs documenting operational activities, equipment status, and any abnormalities.
  • Promptly report abnormal or irregular conditions and take corrective actions within prescribed guidelines to prevent equipment damage or operational hazards.
  • Collaborate with team members to implement changes in plant conditions and chemistry.
  • Train and develop employees in preventive maintenance and routine equipment service activities, applying situational leadership and promoting environmental and safety stewardship.
  • Support the revision, training, and implementation of operating procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the O&M Manager or designee.
  • Use the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to manage work orders and control spare parts inventory.
  • Assist in budget planning and cost control.
  • Ensure all work is completed correctly the first time, meeting both customer and co-worker expectations.
  • Fulfill other tasks as assigned by the Operations Manager or designee, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of plant operations.
