About The Position

This position is accountable for the daily inspection, repair, and maintenance of all bridge structures and sign trusses in the district in order to ensure their safe, effective, and efficient operation and preservation of the investment therein. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire an Operations Bridge Engineer. Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Five years of experience in civil engineering.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of bridge types, basic components, and problems related to bridges.
  • Experience with bridge maintenance and inspection.
  • Ability to initiate, coordinate and direct large scale engineering programs or research and planning activities of a difficult technical nature.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the laws and policies controlling the activities administered.
  • Good decision making, supervisory and organizational skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Project management experience.
  • Element Level and Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member certification or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date.
  • Program Manager and Team Leader status for Routine Inspections as defined in the Structural Services Manual within 12 months of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures maximum feasible safety of all bridges.
  • Detects potential structural failures and initiate prompt corrective action.
  • Provides supervisors with workable solutions to overcome bridge and sign truss deficiencies.
  • Establishes and effectively and efficiently monitors the bridge rehabilitation program.
  • Provides for effective and efficient inspection, repair, and preventative maintenance of district bridges and sign trusses.
  • Develops and implements effective on-the-job training for subordinate personnel and the recommendation of training by outside agents when necessary.
  • Monitors the required inspection frequencies for the various types of inspections required for each bridge or structure to prevent National Bridge Inspection Standard (NBIS) delinquencies.
  • Prepares and/or assists in the development of plans for the annual bridge construction program, contract maintenance program, and Day Labor program.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.
