About The Position

The Operations and Maintenance Assistant (Facility Services) is part of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s Integrated Operations, Planning, and Support Services Group. The role performs general maintenance, commercial janitorial, and custodial services across Southern California desert facilities to help ensure continuous operational readiness. Primary assigned home facilities are Hinds Pumping Plant in Desert Center and Gene Camp in Parker Dam. The position requires frequent travel—up to 250 miles daily—and support across multiple remote locations, including industrial sites, pumping plants, regional offices, and residential housing. A 5% Desert Branch Assignment Premium is provided to qualifying employees assigned to Gene Camp or Hinds Pumping Plant for this position.

The posted work schedule is part-time, three 10-hour days: Monday–Wednesday or Wednesday–Friday; part-time hours will vary. The minimum education requirement is a high school diploma or GED. A valid California Class C driver’s license or equivalent is required at the time of application and must be maintained during employment.

Requirements

• Knowledge of deep-cleaning methods for commercial and residential properties.
• Experience handling industrial cleaning agents and sanitizers.
• Ability to perform heavy lifting, bending, and prolonged standing.
• Ability to work comfortably in high-temperature desert environments.
• Willingness and ability to travel up to 250 miles daily and work across multiple locations.

• Prior commercial janitorial experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive industrial, commercial, and residential custodial services across pumping plants and regional offices.
• Assist regional teams with maintaining facility readiness and cleanliness and hygiene standards, including in storage areas and facilities.
• Perform ground maintenance, including digging ditches, and operate relevant tools and equipment.
• Perform other related Operations and Maintenance Assistant duties as required.
• Assist with general administrative duties, which may include filing and data entry.
• Pick up, sort, and deliver mail, packages, and freight.
• Operate vehicles, forklifts, scissor lifts, or light equipment.
• Perform traffic control duties, including flagging, to safely direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic through temporary work zones.
• Travel frequently to provide support across multiple California Desert Region facilities and maintain service continuity.
• Clean facilities, vehicles, and watercraft, and assist with routine operations and maintenance.
• Properly dispose of facility and kitchen waste.
