About The Position

The Operational Engineer (L5) serves as the technical lead within the network operations team, bridging day-to-day operations and engineering segments. This role is responsible for managing cross-engineering/departmental coordination, supporting infrastructure changes and deployments, and driving software improvement initiatives. The Operational Engineer provides technical mentorship to CSC and NOC teams, manages complex issues requiring ongoing investigation, and delivers detailed reporting on critical problems and mitigation progress.

Requirements

  • Engineering Degree, Electronics, Telecommunications, Network Engineering, Information Technology, or related technical field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years in network, satellite, or telecommunications operations, with a focus on technical troubleshooting and engineering support.
  • Experience in cross-functional project coordination and technical mentorship.
  • Strong background in incident and service ticket management, network troubleshooting, and service assurance.
  • Advanced knowledge of satellite communication systems, network infrastructure, RF technologies, and service delivery platforms.
  • Proficiency in network protocols, monitoring tools, automation solutions, and software deployment.
  • Experience with hardware/software upgrades (routers, switches, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive, analytical mindset.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
  • Must be able to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods program (CGP) and Reliability.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with LEO/GEO satellite networks, IP networking, and SDN preferred.
  • Bilingual (English and French) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for complex maintenance, hardware/software upgrades, and repairs of network infrastructure and equipment.
  • Actively monitor system performance, diagnose complex issues, and implement solutions to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate on the design, installation, and configuration of communication networks, including LAN/WAN, fiber optics, wireless, and satellite systems.
  • Identify systemic/recurring issues and develop new processes, often through automation, to enhance efficiency and reliability.
  • Maintain detailed operational engineering documentation, processes, and configurations; work with cross-functional teams (IT, production, management, clients) to meet operational needs.
  • Serve as an engineering bridge supporting operational activities, orchestrating across NSO and other segments, providing engineering support for infrastructure change/deployment activities.
  • Ensure accuracy and precision in solution implementation and service assurance. Negotiate with diplomacy, use service metrics and relevant compelling information, reach consensus and buy-in to achieve optimal results.
  • Plan and drive software improvement initiatives, including new software configuration and testing with various segments (i.e. Engineering, Sys Ops, Sat Ops, Cybersecurity, and others).
  • Provide technical support and mentorship to CSC and NOC technicians. Conduct train-the-trainer sessions and provide ongoing technical expertise outside the day-to-day operations.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot complex network performance issues, resolve customer, network, and service performance issues.
  • Lead escalation and resolution of complex problems, including bug fixes and software issues requiring ongoing support and investigation.
  • Prepare and deliver regular reports to management, highlighting high-value issues and progress on mitigation initiatives.
  • Manage day-after engineering and vendor support and drive solutions for technical challenges.
