About The Position

The Operating Room Technician participates as a member of the surgical team, scrubbing to support quality patient care during operative procedures and maintaining vigilance over the sterile field. The technician anticipates the surgeon’s needs and handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment required during procedures. This onsite position is based at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hazleton.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Technical school diploma in surgical technology.
• Less than one year of experience.
• Ability to initiate, accept, and adapt to constant change in a healthcare setting.
• Effective communication and customer service skills.
• Knowledge of medical and surgical supplies and sterile techniques.
• Time-management and organizational skills.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association.
• CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, upon hire.
• Must meet an applicable surgical technologist qualification: completion of an accredited surgical technologist program and maintenance of an accredited certification; completion of an appropriate U.S. Army, Navy, or Air Force surgical technology training program; or qualifying certification or prior employment in surgical technology as specified in the posting.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures and help ensure the operating room is a safe environment.
• Perform surgical counts according to facility policy and organize case carts for upcoming procedures.
• Collaborate with the operating room circulator before procedures to prepare the operating room and gather and prepare sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment.
• Prepare and maintain the sterile field using sterile and aseptic techniques, and ensure surgical equipment functions properly and safely.
• Perform between-case cleaning and turnover in the operating room suite.
