Operating Room Tech Per Diem
About The Position
Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Operating Room Tech uses detailed knowledge of surgical instruments and prescribed procedures to provide surgeons with appropriate sterile instruments and supplies throughout surgery. Duties are performed under the close supervision of Registered Nurses and Physicians, who are immediately available to provide direction and control. The position also sets up and strips down the operating room before and after surgery under the guidance of a Circulating Nurse. The role maintains sterile fields and aseptic technique, prepares and checks surgical equipment, supports patient preparation and positioning, assists with documentation and patient care, and helps ensure compliance with established safety and infection-control procedures. The position is per diem at Kindred Hospital Baldwin Park.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Successful completion of an Operating Room Technician technical training program or equivalent.
- 12 to 18 months of acute-care operating room experience.
- Must read, write, and speak fluent English.
- Good oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good and regular attendance.
Nice To Haves
- CST certification preferred.
Responsibilities
- Prepare instruments, supplies, and equipment for each surgical procedure and maintain appropriate sterile fields.
- Ensure the surgical suite is clean and that appropriate equipment is available and functional.
- Hand sterile instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures while maintaining aseptic technique.
- Track irrigation solution used at the surgical incision so it can be subtracted from total fluid to determine patient blood loss.
- Correctly identify blood, solutions, drugs, drainage tubes, and appliances ordered for the patient by the surgeon or anesthetist.
- Verify sponge and needle counts with the circulating nurse before surgery, before closure, and after closure.
- Set up the operating room with the correct equipment, instruments, packs, and supplies for the planned procedure.
- Set up and confirm operation of monitoring and support equipment, including cardiac monitors, scopes, and breathing apparatus.
- Prepare the patient for surgery by washing or shaving the operative area and positioning the patient as prescribed.
- Strip down the operating room after surgery by cleaning walls, floors, and equipment with antiseptic solution and disposing of waste and soiled supplies.
- Transport patients to the recovery room or to and from wards.
- Assist the RN in maintaining patient-care documentation and report pertinent information.
- Provide patient care as directed by the RN and contribute input to the nursing care plan in accordance with the surgical procedure.
- Ensure surgical team members comply as fully as possible with established aseptic procedures.
- Participate in and support performance-improvement and risk-management activities.
- Participate in unit committees to help achieve department goals.
- Comply with personal protective equipment requirements for protection from blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemicals, disinfectants, radiation, asbestos, and other hazardous substances.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
