About The Position

The Operating Room Manager is responsible for supervising all clinical and ancillary personnel involved in Endoscopy, Operating Rooms, and Sterile Processing. This role involves ensuring effective supervision and direction of all phases of the clinical nursing function within the Operating Room, managing staffing needs and efficiency, and serving as a liaison between surgical staff, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and external service providers. The manager collaborates with various departments and leadership to ensure smooth day-to-day operations, efficient patient flow, and adherence to policies and budget. They are also responsible for developing and implementing policies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering a safe and competent work environment.

Requirements

  • Competent and able to circulate in all types of cases.

  • Provides safe environment for patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Assists all physicians with mastering the electronic health record, documentation and surgical notes.
  • Ensures the nursing policies, procedures and practices in the Operating Room are consistent within the nursing team to ensure standardized practice.
  • Monitors PI data, reviews at staff meetings and documents.
  • Maintains regulatory compliance for designated area and staff compliance.
  • Collaborates with the Physicians to collect and analyze data.
  • Makes a plan with the DON for any additional data needed, or plans to change practice based on the data.
  • Consults with Medical Director with regard to any medical concerns.
  • Collaborates with the DON and Safety Committee to develop and monitor orientation policies and procedures to provide competent staff.
  • Coordinates time off and call off procedures that are fair to all staff.
  • Collaborates with the DON for approval on schedules.
  • Performs quarterly and yearly evaluations and monitors job performance of all staff to confirm compliance with policies and personnel policies.
  • Schedules with the Director of Nursing and Director of Facilities to schedule and conduct quarterly evacuation and fire drills for all facility personnel.
  • Assists DON in coordinating employee injury/illness program.
  • Reviews variance reports with the DON.
  • Looks for trends or concerns and plans to improve practice.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned and/or needed within the Operating Room Complex.

  • Builds redundancy without the Operating Room team. This includes assuring that the OR RNs can scrub if needed and cover most types of cases.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises all clinical and ancillary personnel involved in Endoscopy, Operating Rooms, and Sterile Processing.
  • Monitors staff lateness and attendance and documents on staff records.
  • Communicates with all staff to ensure clear reporting times.
  • Provides effective supervision and direction of all phases of the clinical nursing function in the Operating Room.
  • Completes staff evaluations in conjunction with the Director.
  • Balances staffing needs and efficiency while limiting overtime.
  • Serves as the formal liaison between surgical staff, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and contracted service providers/sales representatives.
  • Represents the Operating Room nursing function in institutional planning and provides periodic reports.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Nursing and other management team members to establish and maintain standards for the Operating Room.
  • Collaborates with Administration, DON, BOM, Scheduler, and Pre-op/PACU Manager to ensure correct staffing and supplies for all cases.
  • Schedules and attends weekly meetings with the Administrator and Director of Nursing.
  • Manages day-to-day, week-to-week, and long-term outlook for cases, including staffing, equipment, education, and regulatory preparedness.
  • Communicates closely with the Scheduling Coordinator regarding case schedules.
  • Keeps leaders updated on any necessary changes to operating room schedules or patient arrivals.
  • Ensures efficient flow of procedures by monitoring surgeon availability, on-time arrival, and informing surgeons of delays.
  • Updates all operating room changes in the Electronic Health Record to reflect accurate patient flow.
  • Collaborates with Materials Management on equipment, implants, and trays needed for upcoming cases, including returning equipment.
  • Coordinates X-Ray needs in collaboration with the DON and communicates with the Scheduler and Radiation Technicians.
  • Evaluates staffing relative to patient acuity and makes adjustments as needed.
  • Circulates in all types of cases and assists with patient care when required, including turning over rooms.
  • Provides a safe environment for patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Collaborates with SPD/OR/Materials for efficiency.
  • Assists physicians with mastering the electronic health record, documentation, and surgical notes.
  • Develops policies and procedures to provide quality nursing care and maintains optimal professional conduct and practice.
  • Ensures nursing policies, procedures, and practices are consistent within the nursing team for standardized practice.
  • Participates in the development, allocation, and administration of the Operating Room nursing budget.
  • Monitors cost containment for supplies and inventory with Materials Management.
  • Reviews all procedures requiring surgical nursing care to ensure comparable quality of care.
  • Establishes and implements standards of nursing care and mechanisms for evaluating such care.
  • Consults with physicians on patient care and acts as a patient/staff advocate.
  • Maintains a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behavior.
  • Builds redundancy within the Operating Room team, ensuring RNs can scrub and cover most case types.
