About The Position

The Operating Room Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting patient care and operational efficiency within the hospital's surgical and imaging departments. This position involves a variety of essential duties, including patient transport, maintaining a clean and organized environment through general and equipment cleaning, gathering and preparing specialized equipment, transporting specimens, and performing room turnovers and shave preps. The assistant will also provide direct patient care support, such as positioning and prepping patients under the guidance of registered nurses, physicians, or technicians. Additionally, the role includes preparing for upcoming procedures by setting up trays and supplies, and ensuring adequate stock levels for various modalities. A key aspect of this role is facilitating patient flow, acting as a communication hub, assisting with patient transfers, and providing patient companionship while awaiting procedures. Specific duties may vary depending on the department, with specialized responsibilities outlined for the Operating Room, Imaging Services, and Cath Lab.

  • Assist with patient transfers
  • Remain with patients while awaiting their procedures as needed
  • Room turnover goal is accomplished in 25 minutes or less and maximizing efficiency is expected (Operating Room Only)
  • Ongoing telephone communications between departments (Imaging Services Only)
  • Assisting with prioritizing daily patient schedules (Imaging Services Only)
  • Coordinating throughout in procedure room as directed (Imaging Services Only)
  • Retrieving lab results (Imaging Services Only)
  • Provides assistance to all hospital-based Imaging departments and campus adjacent imaging centers as needed to support patient care (Imaging Services Only)
  • Transporting non-controlled pharmaceuticals to lab when ordered (Cath Lab Only)
  • Responsible for educating lab staff regarding proper sanitizing practices and signs off competencies (Cath Lab Only)
  • Responsible for orienting and sign-off of employees to supply distribution centers (Cath Lab Only)
  • Collaborates with technologists to manage availability of sterile instruments available for use (Cath Lab Only)
  • Responsible for receipt, distribution, and storage of supplies while utilizing technology-based LEAN par management system (Cath Lab Only)
  • Serves as a department resource and product liaison (Cath Lab Only)
