About The Position

The UNM Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Master of Social Work (MSW) Program is seeking a self-motivated individual to join our dynamic multi-disciplinary team. The mission of the MSW Program is to build more just and equitable communities through improving the quality of behavioral health and social services for New Mexico and beyond; promoting best practices and the most current research; listening and valuing the knowledge of individuals about themselves and their communities; and promoting service provision that is humble, anti-oppressive, and informed. The MSW Program is seeking a full-time 12-month faculty member to join their team for the Spring 2027 semester. This position is a unique opportunity to teach the inaugural class of the newest graduate program at UNM. Teaching will include in-person and online (synchronous and asynchronous) graduate courses, including summers. The preferred candidate will have practice experience relevant to medical social work and interest in bringing this experience into the classroom. The majority of the faculty’s workload will be teaching classes in the MSW Program. The qualified candidate should have interest in developing new processes and materials, including writing lesson plans for courses that have never been taught. Additionally, faculty will have clinical time. The setting for this within UNM Health Sciences Center will be determined collaboratively based on the faculty member’s experience and Health Sciences Center needs. This is a 12-month, benefits eligible position. The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences is a multi-division department within the UNM School of Medicine. Requirements

  • A doctorate or PhD in an area related to social services. Evidence of ability to graduate with this degree by December 2026 is also acceptable.
  • A Master of Social Work (MSW), regardless of doctorate/PhD academic area
  • A minimum of two (2) years of post-masters experience practicing social work
  • A license to practice social work (Licensed Masters Social Worker [LMSW] or Licensed Clinical Social Worker [LCSW]). An equivalent license from another state is also acceptable.
  • Evidence of potential for effective full-time teaching
  • Evidence of leadership and ability to contribute to a highly collaborative academic environment.
  • Willingness to work after 5 pm on campus 2-3 evenings/week
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States

Nice To Haves

  • A doctorate of social work (DSW) or a PhD in social work
  • Experience teaching social work courses
  • Experience with Canvas, Zoom, and/or Exxat
  • Social work practice experience in medical settings, such as hospice, home health, dialysis, and/or hospital units and/or experience in public health
  • Knowledge on topics such as human development, substance use disorders, death & dying, professional ethics, social policy, and/or child welfare
  • Social work practice experience in New Mexico
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
