About The Position

The Design Program in the Department of Art & Design at California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) is seeking an innovative and versatile design educator with a broad range of design skills, focusing on graphic design, visual communication, and interdisciplinary design practice, for a tenure-track appointment at open rank. Candidates should possess creative and technical experience across a broad range of research-based and professional design practices. Creative efforts may include branding and identity systems, creative direction, art direction, publication and editorial design, illustration, commercial photography, or other forms of visual communication. Technical efforts should demonstrate proficiency with contemporary design tools, technologies, and production methods across print, digital, and emerging media, using both industry-standard and experimental approaches.

Requirements

A terminal degree from an accredited university in a field associated with design or an appropriate terminal postgraduate degree in design or a related field by the time of appointment.
At least one year of teaching and/or professional experience in graphic design, visual communication, or interdisciplinary design practice using contemporary design software and production processes, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects, Lightroom, Figma, or comparable applications.
Proficiency with contemporary graphic design and visual communication applications, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom, Figma, or comparable professional software.
An interest in advancing student learning across a broad range of design practices, including graphic design, visual communication, branding and identity, creative and art direction, publication and editorial design, illustration, motion graphics, interdisciplinary design, and academic research.
The ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.
Some teaching experience in relevant design subjects at the university undergraduate level.
Degree in hand by time of appointment.

Nice To Haves

Terminal degree in graphic design, visual communication, communication design, interdisciplinary design, or a related field by employment start date.
Interest in or experience with collaborative practices in classroom, university, and industry settings.
Experience in introducing and supporting students in professional opportunities, such as coordinating internships or co-ops, student-staffed design studios, and experiential and service-learning projects.
Expertise with contemporary graphic design and visual communication applications, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects, Lightroom, Figma, or comparable professional software.
Experience with professional design workflows and production processes, including typography and page layout, vector and raster image creation, photographic capture and image processing, branding and identity systems, motion graphics, print production and prepress, prototyping, and digital publishing.
Experience configuring, managing, and troubleshooting contemporary digital design workflows across Apple and Windows workstations, including file preparation, color management, font management, digital asset management, and print and digital output.
Experience with experimental approaches, emerging technologies, and evolving modes of design practice, which may include generative and AI-assisted design tools, interactive and web-based media, motion and time-based media, extended reality, creative coding, data visualization, or other emerging forms of visual communication.
Experience with design production and fabrication technologies such as large-format and photographic printing, digital cutting, laser cutting and engraving, 3D printing, CNC processes, or other equipment and processes that expand graphic and visual communication into physical, spatial, or interdisciplinary design practices.
Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation.
Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at program level.

Comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment, as the position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
File a Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis and complete training within 6 months of assuming office and every 2 years thereafter, as the position may be 'Designated' under California State University's Conflict of Interest Code.
