About The Position

The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking faculty members to strengthen our presence in artificial intelligence (AI). This is an open search and we anticipate more than one hire. Successful applicants will have expertise in AI and machine learning and will lead independent research programs that develop and apply computational approaches with the potential to achieve measurable benefits to health care. Our hiring is organized around 1) the methods of AI and 2) broader areas of biomedical informatics that impact one or more clinical focus areas. For methods of AI, we are interested in candidates who bring expertise in building methods that learn across one or more of imaging, waveform, video, language, structured electronic health record, and biological data. These areas are important to cross-cutting department and school themes. Demonstrated impact on clinical focus areas need not yet be in place at the time of recruitment, but translational potential should be apparent. For broader areas of biomedical informatics, work should include demonstrable impact in one or more of the following areas of clinical focus: Cancer: imaging, molecular profiling, treatment selection, and response. Neuroscience. Neuroimaging, neurophysiological signal, and models of disease progression and treatment response. Cardiovascular health. Waveform and imaging data, risk prediction, and decision support across the cardiovascular care pathway. Musculoskeletal health and orthopedics. Imaging, movement and device data, surgical planning, and outcomes after intervention. Transplant. Donor and recipient matching, rejection risk, and long-term graft and patient outcomes. The DBMI and the CU Anschutz campus environments are ideally built for development and translation of work in this space through its strong connections to health systems (Children’s Hospital Colorado, UCHealth, the Colorado VA) as well as the University of Colorado Cancer Center, Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine, the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, and other campus units focused on translation of data, models, and methods to practice. The ideal candidate will seek to lead studies that close the loop from lab to clinical care and back, mentor trainees, and help establish resources that enrich the campus environment.

Requirements

  • PhD in biomedical informatics or a related technical field (e.g., computer science, engineering, physics, applied mathematics, statistics) OR MD/DO plus graduate degree in an appropriate technical field
  • A track record of accomplishments consistent with appointment to an Assistant Professor position in DBMI in the CU SOM
  • A track record of accomplishments consistent with appointment to an Associate Professor position in DBMI in the CU SOM
  • A track record of accomplishments consistent with appointment to a Professor position in DBMI in the CU SOM
  • Rank at the time of appointment will be based on the candidate’s demonstrated contributions and experience in teaching, clinical, research, and/or service to the field.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Research accomplishments and publications that integrate two or more data modalities, such as imaging, waveform, video, free text, structured electronic health record data, or molecular data
  • Development and publication of biomedical informatics approaches in one or more of the department's areas of clinical focus: cancer, neuroscience, cardiovascular health, musculoskeletal health and orthopedics, or transplant
  • Evidence of success competing for extramural research support appropriate to career stage, such as training or career development awards for candidates at the Assistant Professor level and independent research project funding at the Associate Professor or Professor level
  • Software, tools, or systems adopted beyond the candidate's own group, evidenced by documented external use, contributors, or deployment
  • Sustained collaboration with clinical investigators, evidenced by co-authored publications or named roles on funded projects with clinical partners

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead an independent research program with external support
  • Develop novel methods or strategies to apply AI, computation, and technology to medicine
  • Individually and in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, obtain external funding and publish impactful manuscripts.
  • Mentor pre- and post-doctoral non-clinical and clinical trainees.
