About The Position

MercyOne is seeking an Oncology Registered Nurse (RN) for their Richard Deming Cancer Center Des Moines Hematology Oncology. This full-time position involves providing professional nursing care and skills in an outpatient setting to patients of diverse ages, from young adults to geriatrics. The role requires flexibility to work at both the main campus and West Lakes offices on a rotating basis. The Oncology RN will be responsible for applying the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation), recognizing and responding to emergency needs, facilitating interdisciplinary communication, and coordinating patient care with various specialists and support services. This includes managing treatments, educating patients and families, maintaining aseptic technique, documenting care, and collaborating with the healthcare team. The position emphasizes a patient-centered approach, focusing on optimizing outcomes and minimizing side effects through tailored treatment plans and supportive services.

Requirements

• Possession of a current license as a RN issued by the State of Iowa.
• Minimum of three years acute care experience.
• Demonstrated ability to perform basic nursing skills in an outpatient setting.
• Knowledge of principles of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and disease processes.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Apply professional nursing skills in the provision of the treatment of ill and injured patients utilizing the four aspects of the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
• Demonstrate ability to recognize and assess emergency needs of patients and initiate therapeutic procedures as needed within their scope of practice.
• Act to facilitate interdisciplinary communication. Utilize other members of the health care team in assessing the patient and analyze patient data.
• Assess learning needs of the patient and significant others. Give accurate and complete information to patient and family.
• Coordinate care which may include but not limited to: Dieticians, Endoscopy, Dental offices for dental extractions prior to therapy, Home Care, Hospice, Palliative Care, Pain Center, Oncology Nurse Navigators, VA and other health care centers, American Cancer Society (travel services, accommodations, financial support, assist devices, etc.), Medical/Surgical Oncology physicians, Inpatient nursing units, Counseling services (inpatient and outpatient).
• Evaluate patient and family understanding of treatment plan and/or instructions.
• Manage radiation treatment planning, delivery, and follow-up care.
• Provide tube feeding management and ongoing education, support for home management of parenteral nutrition and site care.
• Manage medications as prescribed.
• Assist with a variety of procedures and exams, including endoscopic nasopharyngeal exams and tracheostomy management.
• Manage IV pumps.
• Provide patient/family or caregiver education and counseling in recognition and solution of physical, emotional, and environmental health problems, including but not limited to side effects of radiation therapy (Hypovolemia, Skin care- radiation dermatitis, Lymphoedema, Mucositis, Pain management – mild to severe, GI/GU system side effects), medication management/patient education, and emotional support.
• Maintain appropriate aseptic technique for preparation, procedures, and medications administered.
• Perform dressing changes and manage wound drainage devices.
• Assist patient with ambulation, elimination needs (toilet, urinal, bed pan) and undressing/dressing, protecting patients from injury/falls.
• Reprocess instrumentation.
• Utilize hospital information system to process data and retrieve patient information.
• Access and utilize hospital patient information databases, including PACS.
• Work independently with limited direct supervision using MercyOne Medical Center policies, nursing standards, and professional judgment.
• Maintain knowledge of equipment set-up, maintenance, and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, and drainage devices).
• Maintain confidentiality regarding all patient/personnel information.
• Be a self-starter and able to work independently and make appropriate decisions within clinic guidelines.
• Accurately document assessment and results in patient record.
• Manage and document patient and/or family written records upon request, such as FMLA forms and Disability forms.
• Report test results and pertinent information to patients and health care team members, including Physicians, Radiation therapists, and the Nursing team.
• Utilize professional and tactful communications at all times with all team members.
• Maintain inventory and stocking of supplies.
• Participate in staff development activities and orientation as requested.
• Promote a teamwork atmosphere.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.
