About The Position

As a Clinical Pharmacist Specialist in Hematology/Oncology at UChicago Medicine, you will be a registered pharmacist responsible for providing safe, effective, and prompt medication therapy for adult ambulatory cancer patients. You will support medical teams by assessing patient needs, incorporating age and disease-specific characteristics into drug therapy and patient education, adjusting care based on patient response, and intervening to prevent adverse medication events. Clinical Pharmacist Specialists act as departmental resources and liaisons, manage medication use according to standards, and conduct clinical research and quality improvement initiatives. They also provide education and training, and serve as preceptors for pharmacy students and residents. This specific role involves Beacon order set validation for clinical trials and standard of care therapies, patient counseling, and providing clinical pharmacy support to medical oncology teams. You will also be a primary preceptor for PGY1 and PGY2 residents and APPE and IPPE pharmacy students.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy
  • Completion of ASHP accredited PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency
  • Knowledge of contemporary hospital/clinical practice and service
  • Knowledge and understanding of general hospital operations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interact constructively with supervisors, peers, and support personnel
  • Ability to integrate clinical and distributive pharmacy services with quality improvement, teaching, research, and professional development activities
  • Significant general clinical knowledge and expertise in traditional therapeutics and patient centered care
  • Significant knowledge and expertise in advanced pharmacy practice, specialty medication therapy management, and specialty evidence-based medicine in area appropriate for clinical assignments
  • Strong teaching and precepting skills and expertise in experiential training
  • Eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the state of Illinois and Indiana or eligible (complete licensure process within 60 days of employment)
  • Board Certification in area of expertise is required within 18 months of hire (BCOP)

Nice To Haves

  • Doctor of Pharmacy or another advanced degree
  • PGY-2 Oncology or Clinical pharmacy experience (2-4 years) in a hospital setting (required if no PGY-2 residency).

Responsibilities

  • Actively serve as preceptors for doctor of pharmacy students and pharmacy residents.
  • Participate in Beacon order set validation for both clinical trial research and standard of care therapies.
  • Conduct patient counseling.
  • Provide clinical pharmacy support to the medical oncology teams.
  • Serve as a primary preceptor (PGY1 and PGY2 residents; APPE and IPPE pharmacy students).
