Onboard Developer Platform Software Engineer

Waymo•Mountain View, CA
•$213,000 - $263,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company developing the Waymo Driver, which powers its fully autonomous ride-hail service and can be applied to other vehicle platforms and product use cases. As Waymo scales, this team builds the infrastructure, architecture, tooling, and platform needed to improve onboard engineering productivity and address critical development bottlenecks. In this hybrid role, you will develop reliable, scalable, and maintainable systems that accelerate large-scale simulation and evaluation, reinforcement-learning-based fine-tuning pipelines, and analysis. You will evolve the simulation and evaluation platform to make onboard engineers’ software-development inner loop substantially faster, while supporting realistic, reproducible simulations and high-performance on-car driving.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a software engineer or in a similar role.
  • At least 3 years of experience in C++.
  • At least 2 years of experience working on a large-scale, high-complexity system supported by hundreds of engineers.
  • At least 2 years of experience building infrastructure, including performant, easy-to-use, scalable systems and tools.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years in infrastructure, systems, or performance work optimizing end-to-end systems for high performance.
  • At least 2 years of experience optimizing software systems using profile-guided techniques.
  • Experience with large-scale evaluation techniques.
  • Experience with large-scale software re-architecture projects.
  • Experience with machine-learning pipelines and workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Develop reliable, scalable, and maintainable systems to meet user needs, including systems for large-scale simulation and evaluation, reinforcement-learning-based fine-tuning pipelines, and analysis.
  • Evolve and scale the simulation and evaluation platform to accelerate the software-development inner loop for more than 500 onboard engineers.
  • Develop the ADV’s modular architecture and frameworks to enable low-latency, reproducible, realistic simulation in data centers while maintaining high performance for on-car driving.
  • Optimize resource usage for simulation at scale in cloud data centers, including CPU utilization, latency, RAM consumption, and allocation of computation across CPU, GPU, and TPU.
  • Collaborate to resolve compute-performance bottlenecks throughout the ADV, simulator, and analysis software stacks, ensuring low end-to-end latency for simulation and analysis.
  • Develop high-scale performance evaluation, debugging, and software change-management processes.

Benefits

  • Eligibility to participate in Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program.
  • Eligibility to participate in an equity incentive plan.
  • Generous company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
