The Off-Shift Nurse Manager (RN) is responsible for coordinating activities between hospital departments and acting as a liaison between physicians, nurses, families, etc. This role assumes a public relations function, responding to press calls and dealing with external agencies. The Nurse Manager makes arrangements between hospitals for equipment, and assists patients and families with social and behavioral problems. They serve as an expert clinical resource for patient placement, working collaboratively with the admitting office to ensure appropriate placement of all admissions and transfers. This position acts as the central contact with the authority to make all bed management decisions, monitoring bed availability and turnover. The Nurse Manager facilitates continuous patient throughput through effective communication with staff and leadership, and coordinates patient transfers via the "one call" transfer center. They arrange Patient Services staffing for the following shift, document absenteeism, and assess weekend staffing, adjusting as needed. The role involves making hospital rounds to gather important patient information from Charge Nurse reports, establishing and maintaining effective communication with other Managers, and contributing to the evaluation of nursing staff. The Nurse Manager provides leadership, participates in formal conference sessions with union representatives, and assists in grievance procedures. They act as a resource for staff in clinical and administrative matters, investigate Unusual Incidents, and support/enforce Patient Services and Hospital Policies. Participation in committees, functioning as a member of the code team, conducting post-code critiques, and promoting quality care through the Nursing Process are also key functions. The Nurse Manager reviews care plans, evaluates implementation, and conducts informal patient care conferences. Other work-related duties are assigned as needed. Responsibilities include continual analysis and balancing of priorities to manage administrative and patient care functions on the assigned shift, keeping the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Nursing Officer informed. The role challenges current working practices, identifies process improvement opportunities, and presents recommendations to management.
