About The Position

Hatch is seeking a highly motivated OCS (Overhead Contact System) Engineer to join their North American Infrastructure group in their Rail Systems team. The role is based in the Boston, MA area, with other possible locations including Ambler, PA; Dallas, TX; Chicago, IL; Minneapolis, MN; Newark, NJ; Brooklyn, NY; Portland, OR; and Seattle, WA. The ideal candidate is a results-driven engineering professional with excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work effectively in a team, and is detail-oriented with strong organizational skills. They should be capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines, maintaining high quality standards, and working independently with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, relevant experience may be considered as a substitute for degree requirements.
  • 5 to 15 years of experience with dc OCS systems design, including the design of 600 to 1500 volt dc rail as well as 12 to 25 kilovolt AC
  • Thorough understanding of the National Electrical Safety Code (NEC) and local codes.
  • Experience with the North American transit/transportation industry is highly desirable.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional engineer’s license or engineer-in-training certificate is an advantage.
  • Tension and pole/foundation load calculations
  • AutoCAD or MicroStation experience.
  • Experience with Structural engineering analysis software like STAAD and RISA is a plus.
  • Experience in field testing of OCS systems
  • Knowledge of railway traction power systems
  • Project management experience

Responsibilities

  • Design OCS layout, wire tensions, foundations, poles/columns/structures for light rail, commuter rail and streetcar with pantograph as well as streetcar and electrified buses with trolley poles.
  • Coordinate with other engineers for systems integration and design.
  • Prepare design reports.
  • Develop documents including specifications, drawings and cost estimates.
  • Review project submittments and requests for information from contractors.
  • Provide installation, testing and commissioning support to clients.
  • Management of OCS projects.
