About The Position

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is seeking an Oceans Sustainable Blue Finance Intern to support its Oceans Blue Finance team. This team operates at the intersection of ocean conservation and finance, aiming to redirect global capital towards a sustainable blue economy. The intern will conduct research on the environmental and social risk management (ESRM) practices and policies of financial institutions (FIs) in key ocean industries like shipping, offshore wind (OSW), and seafood. This analysis will assess alignment with best practices, such as the UNEP FI sustainable blue economy finance principles, and will inform WWF's engagement with the financial sector. Additionally, the intern may assist in the development of the 'Seafood Finance Navigator,' a new digital tool designed to enhance the finance sector's contribution to ocean conservation.

Requirements

  • Must be an enrolled student eligible to receive academic credit from their current academic institution.
  • Able to work either part-time or full-time, depending on class schedule and availability.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • This position is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Research and analysis skills, particularly related to sustainable finance, environmental and social risk management, the blue economy, and innovative sustainable finance products.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary communications, presenting complex ideas to diverse audiences.
  • Exposure to various WWF US Oceans teams (Ocean Markets, Blue Foods, Area Based Conservation, Ocean Communications, Private Sector Engagement, Climate) and external partners.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct desk research on the business case for sustainable blue finance in the shipping and OSW sectors, potentially including stakeholder interviews.
  • Analyze annual reports, sustainability reports, sustainable finance frameworks, and ESRM policies of FIs financing clients in the shipping, OSW, and seafood sectors to benchmark against best practices and identify trends.
  • Perform market research to update a global inventory of blue finance products (e.g., blue bonds, sustainability-linked loans, debt-for-nature swaps) relevant to shipping, OSW, and seafood, and analyze market best practices and enabling factors for product uptake.
  • Provide project management support for the design and development of the Seafood Finance Navigator, including administrative tasks (meeting coordination, note-taking) and content support (drafting web text, design review).
