A Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) in a skilled nursing facility works under an Occupational Therapist to help residents regain or maintain independence in daily activities. COTAs carry out treatment plans using therapeutic exercises and activities, assist residents with activities of daily living, document patient progress for the Occupational Therapist to review, and educate patients and families on home exercises and adaptive equipment. They collaborate with the care team on discharge planning and maintain a safe treatment environment. Skilled nursing facility residents usually stay short-term for rehabilitation after illness, injury, or surgery, and COTAs help them work toward their highest functional level.
