The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant performs selected procedures under the direction of a licensed Occupational therapist who has evaluated the patient and developed a plan of care. Provides services in compliance with regulations governing the practice of occupational therapy and during the course of treatment, takes into consideration the patient’s chronological and developmental ages. This role involves working with an acute care patient base on a flex schedule. The assistant implements individualized treatment programs, monitors patient response to treatment, and communicates progress to the supervising occupational therapist. They coordinate patient care through effective communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team, and document patient treatment and progress. The role also includes orienting new employees, participating in patient care initiatives and departmental activities, maintaining patient confidentiality, and identifying opportunities for efficiency. The assistant exercises clinical judgment within their scope of practice to provide safe, effective, age-appropriate treatment and communicates effectively to promote coordinated, patient-centered care. Services may be provided in various settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, nursing facilities, home care, and community-based environments, with travel between Carilion facilities or patient homes as required.
