About The Position

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides occupational therapy services to patient/residents including treatment plan implementation, patient/family education, discharge planning, and related documentation and communication.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited occupational therapist assistant program.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read, write and interpret documents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and/or co-workers.
  • Knowledge of all codes and demonstrate understanding.
  • New York State Licensure as Occupational Therapist Assistant and current NYS Registration.
  • Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bends, lifts, carry items weighing up to 25 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • Able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients.
  • An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), and Chemical hazards.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses and reports patient reactions to supervising Occupational Therapist and assist with patient evaluation.
  • Instruct patients in activities of daily living.
  • Collaborates with other team members to develop and provide discharge plans and instructions to the patient and those responsible for providing continued care.
  • Supplies or fabricates necessary assistive, orthotic, &/or positioning devices as indicated.
  • Requests supplies and equipment and provides proper durable medical equipment (DME) needed by the patient.
  • Applies thorough knowledge for used of medical equipment in order to render safe and effective care.
  • Observes and evaluates patient's progress.
  • Coordinates occupational therapy with other therapeutic activities according to patient's needs, capabilities, interests and treatment goals and objectives.
  • In collaboration with other team members, assists with the design of treatment plans and recommends programs suited to individual potential and rehabilitative needs.
  • Documents interventions completely, accurately, timely, using all principles of medical record documentation to include signature, time, and date of entry.
  • Performs other related duties.
