About The Position

The Occupational Therapist (OT) is responsible for planning, developing, organizing, implementing, and evaluating occupational therapy services, programs, and activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines. This role involves collaborating with staff, maintaining standards, participating in discharge planning and resident care plans, and managing administrative duties related to therapy services. The OT also performs direct therapy functions, supervises assistants, and ensures accurate billing and documentation.

Requirements

  • Must possess, as a minimum, a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited college or university.
  • Must possess a current, unencumbered license to practice as an Occupational Therapist in this state.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must be knowledgeable of occupational therapy procedures.
  • Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the occupational therapy service.
  • Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc., and maintain the appearance of therapy areas.
  • Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing therapy services.
  • Must be able to communicate information concerning a resident’s condition.
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the Facility.
  • May require lifting of residents, equipment, or other objects, with a minimum of 5 pounds and a maximum of 45 pounds lifting, periodically and or as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, and evaluate occupational therapy services, programs, and activities.
  • Communicate with staff from related departments when planning therapy services.
  • Develop and maintain occupational therapy standards.
  • Assist in standardizing the methods in which occupational therapy will be accomplished.
  • Review occupational therapy policies, procedures, manuals, and job descriptions annually.
  • Interpret occupational therapy policies and procedures to personnel, residents, and family members.
  • Participate in discharge planning and the development and implementation of resident care plans and assessments.
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for directing the occupational therapy department.
  • Maintain treatment records, resident files, and progress notes.
  • Work with consultants for equipment and custom wheelchairs.
  • Ensure accurate coding of therapy services rendered and timely completion of billing and daily notes.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.
  • Write appropriate orders for Occupational Therapy services in the electronic medical chart.
  • Report questions or concerns to the Director of Rehabilitation.
  • Supervise occupational therapy assistants in accordance with state and board policies.
  • Administer therapy services via Telehealth as required.
  • Review requests for occupational therapy services and physician orders.
  • Interview residents to determine treatment needs and schedule therapy.
  • Select rehabilitative and therapeutic activities and exercises based on resident history.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of resident assessments (MDS) and care plans, including quarterly reviews.
  • Inform residents of treatment procedures and prepare necessary equipment.
  • Assist in transporting residents to and from the occupational therapy room.
  • Demonstrate treatment procedures to residents and staff.
  • Perform occupational therapy in resident’s room as necessary.
  • Reassure residents before and during therapy treatment.
  • Prepare residents for treatment and administer occupational therapy.
  • Instruct and supervise residents during therapy.
  • Assist residents in ambulatory training.
  • Recommend modifications and changes to resident therapy treatments.
  • Ensure therapist notes are informative, descriptive, and follow guidelines.
  • Participate in programs for in-service education and on-the-job training.
  • Attend and participate in workshops and seminars to stay informed of current changes in the field.
  • Attend and participate in Facility in-service training programs (e.g., OSHA, TB, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Safety, Infection Control).
  • Follow established safety standards for the occupational therapy department.
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures, including dress code.
  • Comply with Facility’s established safety precautions.
  • Wear and/or use safety equipment when lifting or moving residents.
  • Assist in identifying departmental procedures involving exposure to blood or body fluids.
  • Follow established infection control procedures and universal precautions.
  • Maintain a clean and safe therapy area.
  • Follow reporting procedures for hazardous conditions or equipment.
  • Wear personal protective clothing when performing services with potential exposure to blood or body fluids.
  • Provide necessary materials and equipment for resident therapy.
  • Report inventory, equipment, or supply needs to supervisor.
  • Utilize department equipment and supplies efficiently.
  • Operate occupational therapy equipment safely.
  • Honor resident’s refusal of treatment and report to supervisor.
  • Abide by resident’s participation in treatment decisions.
  • Inform residents of consequences of not participating in prescribed therapy and document.
  • Report resident complaints or grievances to the department supervisor.
  • Allow residents to participate in planning and scheduling their treatment.
  • Adhere to all HIPAA requirements.
  • Report medical concerns and changes in condition to the resident’s nurse and therapy supervisor.
