About The Position

Spokane Public Schools is seeking qualified candidates who are prepared and excited to provide a 21st century learning environment that effectively addresses the emerging necessity of social emotional supports and blending learning strategies. This is a continuing, 1.0 FTE position with 7 hours per day, anticipated to start on August 20, 2026.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from an accredited school of occupational therapy.
  • Registration as an occupational therapist with the American Occupational Therapy Association.
  • Certified or eligible for Washington State certification as an educational staff associate endorsed for occupational therapy.
  • Related experience or a minimum of a pediatric affiliation with a strong interest in pediatrics is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the essential requirements within IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and its application to the provision of compliant services for the disabled.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with a diverse group of parents, teachers, and administrators in providing direct and indirect services to disabled students in a confidential manner.
  • Ability to express thoughts concisely and effectively.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly in written or oral form.
  • Flexible in learning new concepts, cooperates with others, and adapts to a variety of assignments and conditions.
  • Enthusiastic and displays an overall optimism in motivating toward teaching and student learning.
  • Assesses needs of students, prescribes and implements effective lessons to meet those needs through the use of appropriate and current instructional strategies based on best practices.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner through interactions with students and adults, high expectations for student performance, is compassionate but firm when modeling appropriate behavior, and selects appropriate attire.
  • Relates positively to students and adults from varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic background, learning styles, and various disabilities.
  • Maintains a high level of professional expertise and emerging research related to this position.

  • Additional education in occupational therapy, theory, and methods in current usage with disabled children desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct evaluations and design effective treatment plans for disabled students as defined by WAC 392-172A and properly identified according to district procedures.
  • Assist in the identification of students in need of occupational therapy through screening and evaluations.
  • Evaluate and treat individual children to develop actions in performance skills. The occupational therapist deals with both physical and social development and is concerned with children's ability to accomplish tasks related to their developmental progress.
  • Participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team in designing and implementing effective treatment programs as determined by the student's individual educational plan.
  • Relate the educational significance of occupational therapy treatments toward assisting in the student's fullest potential and educational growth.
  • Plan and implement an occupational therapy program for identified children to achieve necessary goals within the educational setting.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate IEP's that focus on assessment data and evaluated student progress using a data based decision-making model.
  • Provide consultation and advisory services to the child's family, health care agencies, and community organizations as needed.
  • Consult with the student's physician concerning the student's occupational therapy program.
  • Consult, instruct, and monitor the student, family, and other educational staff in occupational therapy procedures as needed.
  • Maintain appropriate written records and reports for each child served and/or assessed.
  • Participate in ordering new supplies, manage the equipment, and adopt repairs as necessary for functional operation of said equipment.
  • Participate in continuing education to ensure continued professional growth, awareness, and development.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and expertise; attend, participate and implement district level program requirements of IDEA, NCLD, and Statewide Assessment requirements.
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested from supervisor.
