About The Position

This position provides professional and technical guidance on safety matters to management and other employees of ADOT. The position has primary responsibility for all agency employees and operations within the boundaries of Northeast Project Delivery and Operations (PDO) District, North Central PDO District, and Northwest PDO District (Northern Arizona) and supports all divisions and operations within ADOT as needed. This position can occasionally encounter extremes of cold and hot outdoor temperatures. The position often requires driving significant distances and occasional overnight travel. This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures. The State of Arizona strives for a work culture that affords employees flexibility, autonomy, and trust. Across our many agencies, boards, and commissions, many State employees participate in the State’s Remote Work Program and are able to work remotely in their homes, in offices, and in hoteling spaces. All work, including remote work, should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is properly authorized in advance.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, rules, interpretations.
  • Knowledge of Agency policies, rules and procedures related to safe performance of ADOT activities.
  • Knowledge of Technologies that can be used to perform environmental sampling.
  • Knowledge of Building, bridge, and highway construction techniques, procedures and the hazards created during the different phases of construction.
  • Knowledge of Building, bridge, and highway maintenance practices and the hazards created during work activities.
  • Skills in recognizing hazards and develop practical solutions to minimize employee exposure.
  • Skills in communicating degree of risk based on observations.
  • Skills in effectively presenting safety training materials.
  • Skills in writing effective reports on technical subjects, policies, and instructional documents.
  • Skills in operating and maintaining environmental sampling equipment.
  • Ability to recognize health, environmental, and physical hazards in ADOT work places.
  • Ability to recognize when data integrity during sampling and studies is questionable or valid.
  • Ability to select sampling equipment or technology to provide adequate information to evaluate a hazard.
  • Ability to analyze contracts, specifications, safety plans, and written procedures to verify relevancy to work activity, possible future hazards, and effectiveness of implementation.
  • Ability to interpret complex regulations and codes and apply them to ADOT situations.
  • Ability to develop and lead employee safety committees in productive activities.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks.
  • Must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training.
  • Must maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11) if operating a personally owned vehicle on state business.
  • Must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Participate in incident investigation and review by assisting management in conducting root cause analysis and determining corrective actions as assigned.
  • Conduct safety assistance visits and inspections of ADOT facilities and projects. Recommend improvement to reduce the risk of injury and ensure compliance with applicable safety code requirements (OSHA, National Fire Codes, etc). Provide support and follow up to verify that corrective actions have been completed.
  • Develop, maintain and present safety training. Demonstrate safe work techniques to employees. Attend and participate in safety meetings to communicate and solicit safety ideas and/or concerns. Determine potential problem areas and provide guidance in proper safety procedures.
