About The Position

The Occupational Hygienist advances the global occupational hygiene program through the design and implementation of occupational hygiene processes with a primary focus on laboratory environments. This role drives the evaluation of hazards (including chemical, pharmacologically active, biological and physical) associated with laboratory operations ensuring effectiveness and consistency of risk assessments to advance control design and implementation. The role provides a unique opportunity to partner closely with leaders of laboratory functions, site occupational hygiene / lab safety professionals, facilities and engineering to ensure regulatory compliance. The role holder grows cross network collaboration to advance consistency of environment, health and safety (EHS) risk management practices and advance continuous improvement to enable scientific excellence.

Requirements

  • Applicant must have a bachelor's degree with at least 6 years of experience; OR a master's degree with at least 5 years of experience; OR a PhD with 1+ years of experience
  • Relevant experience in occupational hygiene, laboratory safety, or EHS within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, or research environments.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting exposure assessments and implementing risk management controls within laboratory settings.
  • Organized and detail-oriented self-starter with the ability to handle competing priorities and perform under pressure, bias for action
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills and the ability to work across multiple countries and cultures.
  • Possesses a collaborative spirit, effective influencing skills, strong project management skills
  • Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in occupational hygiene or a related field.
  • Professional certification such as CIH, CSP, or equivalent.
  • Active current membership in at least one relevant professional body, with a formal continuous professional development requirement
  • Experience working across disciplines and senior management in a large, complex organization.

Responsibilities

  • Provides occupational hygiene expertise, to advance the effectiveness of laboratory control systems across the enterprise.
  • Drives the occupational hygiene program for laboratory environments, in accordance with the company standards, participating in the design and continuous improvement of associated global processes.
  • Drives consistency and effectiveness of the risk assessment program for laboratory hazards including: Chemicals (e.g., solvents, reagents, pharmacologically actives, new modalities) Laboratory gases and cryogens Physical hazards (noise, vibration, heat/cold, ergonomics) Laboratory instruments, equipment and technologies
  • Advances quantitative exposure assessments, including air monitoring to specify, verify and assess effectiveness of controls.
  • Partners with R&D, manufacturing, engineering and facilities teams to establish laboratory design, operation, and management practices; aligned with the hierarchy of control principles.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of laboratory EHS standards, standardizing and integrating digital tools to drive consistency and effectiveness across the network.
  • Participates in the development and delivery of laboratory safety training, coaching, and capability building initiatives
  • Builds laboratory EHS capability through the design and implementation of self-audit processes
  • Participates in functional audits, as an SME and leads objective risk reviews, driving action plans and escalating emerging signals to established governance forums as appropriate.
  • Evaluates incidents and events reported for laboratory operations, identifying root causes and corrective actions. Conducts trend analysis using good save and incident precursors to drive improvement opportunities
  • Participates in and drives the laboratory EHS network, enabling consistent implementation of laboratory controls and fostering collaboration, standardization, and replication of proven practices that enhance performance.
