About The Position

The Occupational Health and Safety Manager (OH&S Manager) is responsible for leading the development of programs, initiatives, and implementation of strategy for employee health and safety, across operations. The focus of this role is to ensure ongoing compliance to all internal and external requirements and managing health and safety-related risks and improving related performance. In addition, the OH&S Manager will work with the Director of Occupational Health and Safety and Disability Management and greater OH&S team to audit, develop and continuously improve the Gateway OH&S Management System and associated processes, procedures, and practices in accordance with applicable standards.

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Health and Safety, Human Resources or related field(s).
  • 5+ years of progressive experience within a safety role; ideally in retail, food service, hospitality, or similar environment
  • Effective interpersonal, engagement, relationship building, influencing skills with demonstrated ability to interact and coach individuals and teams across all levels and functions.
  • Excellent project management skills; ability to manage complex projects based on strategic priorities of the business and the organization.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills; ability to achieve results through empowering team members and site partners.
  • Strong emotional intelligence skills, the ability to effectively listen, engage, empower, influence and drive safety initiatives.
  • Ability to collaborate, problem solve, communicate, develop and implement initiatives into the operations.
  • Build trusting relationships as the subject matter expert.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries from internal and external stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters regarding safety, security or personnel issues.
  • Experience and strong technical knowledge with Canadian health & safety regulations, standards and best practices.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills with the ability to successfully perform independent in-depth analysis of safety systems and safety trends.
  • Strong judgement, diplomacy, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Good attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail and Internet navigation.
  • Experience leading people.
  • Proven track record of driving cultural change in safety in multisite, and both union and non-union environments.
  • Experience in developing and delivering H&S training programs.
  • Experience with assessing job hazards; completing and Incident investigations.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
  • Ability to travel between casino sites and work outside of normal business hours as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the ongoing management and improvement of the health and safety system and champions a proactive collaborative health and safety culture for all regional sites.
  • Provides guidance and support to team members regarding health and safety matters in accordance with all applicable internal and external requirements. Applies thorough knowledge of related regulations, standards and best practices.
  • Works with their OH&S Team to review, recommend, and implement modifications to work plans, processes, and procedures to reduce recurring incidents and improve health and safety.
  • Supports Gateway toward achieving applicable, health and safety management systems such as ISO 45001, COR and Safety Excellence.
  • Develops a team of OH&S professionals: mentors and coaches, provides performance management, and creates development plans accordingly.
  • Leads the investigation and resolution of serious and high-risk incidents including root-cause analysis and implementing corrective and preventative measures.
  • For assigned sites: Oversees and tracks incident data, maintains and reports incident data. Identifies and analyzes trends and responsible to communicate, engage and collaborate with senior site and regional leadership toward continual improvement. Takes appropriate action to achieve all targeted OH&S objectives.
  • Works with line management to address and document health and safety issues and escalates unresolved issues.
  • Partners with HR Team and department Managers on injury reporting, workers’ compensation claim handling, return to work plans, and ensuring health and safety competency of all team members.
  • Conducts & documents risk assessments related to jobs (Job Hazard Analysis) and new equipment introductions. Recommends appropriate risk mitigation to management.
  • Continuously stays abreast of current OH&S Legislation, standards and best practices.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact with provincial inspectors to resolve H&S concerns and address orders.
  • Monitors and enforces compliance to all internal and external environmental, health and safety requirements.
  • Oversees, prepares and submits compliance reports as required, including quality control.
  • Provides expert advice and contributes to the development of communications, issues management, public affairs, media relations, government relations, and stakeholder consultation plans and strategies.
